Job Summary

Research Officer /Senior Research Officer (Front Office Research Support, Knowledge Management, CD)

The Western Hemisphere Department (WHD) of the International Monetary Fund seeks a dynamic and highly motivated Research Officer (RO) to work with the department on Research, Knowledge Management, and Capacity Development. The RO will be supervised by the B-level person in charge of knowledge and data management.

Front Office Research Support

The RO will support the Front Office Staff of WHD with the production of charts and tables for internal memos, presentations, and various research projects.

The RO will support the Senior Data Manager, including in the various Fund-wide committees.

Knowledge Management

The RO will support knowledge management in the department. WHD is looking into ways to use technologies, including Microsoft Teams and the Microsoft Power platform, to automate business practices. It is also interested in shifting away from Excel towards more modern technologies such as R and Python.

Capacity Development

The RO will be a key member of WHD CD team. In this capacity the selected candidate will:

  • Coordinate the operational aspects of the annual CD medium-term budgeting and workplan (MTW) and execution throughout the year for WHD. Review and analyze WHD’s current and planned capacity development activities, validate and approve CD workplans under the supervision of the CD coordinator(s), and review and approve funding transfers between WHD portfolios in CDMAP.

  • Prepare data analyses for Regional CD Strategy notes and CD related- Power Point presentations and briefings, review and comment on Fund-wide strategy notes/reviews on CD activities/CDMAP closely coordinating with the CD coordinators.

  • CDMAP. Lead the technical engagement with ICD on topics related to CDMAP, participate in testing sessions for CDMAP releases and enhancements, and make suggestions for further improvements, if necessary. Provide group and one-on-one CDMAP trainings to members of WHD CD team and country teams. Coordinate and provide technical support to country teams to perform tasks in CDMAP.

Minimum qualifications

Advanced University degree in Economics or related field (A master’s degree in economics/econometrics/finance is a plus).

Good knowledge of statistics, econometrics, and macroeconomy

Strong familiarity with at least one statistical package including STATA, R, Python, or EViews is required.

Candidates should enjoy working in a team environment, solving problems, and possess a strong attention to detail and creativity in checking calculations for errors and inconsistencies. Some Spanish language skills desirable, but not required.

Candidates should have a strong affinity for modern technologies, be familiar with Python and R, and be eager to learn new technologies

Candidates should possess an understanding of International Macroeconomics and Econometrics with exposure to a wide variety of techniques such as OLS, instrumental variables, Vector Auto-Regressions (VAR), or non-stationary methods. Great attention to detail and ability to design repeatable and updatable data flow systems are essential.

Deadlines can sometimes be tight so candidates should be communicative and responsive to delivery pressures within a team environment.

It is expected that while the position is advertised at the full grade band, it will be filled at the lower level.

It is expected that the position will be filled by a qualified candidate with work experience at the IMF.
