Duties and Responsibilities 1. Background of the assignment:

United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) is a United Nations entity established in 1968 to support countries worldwide in preventing crime and facilitating criminal justice. UNICRI is mandated to assist intergovernmental, governmental and non-governmental organizations in formulating and implementing improved policies in the field of crime prevention and criminal justice. UNICRI's goals are: - to advance understanding of crime-related problems; - to foster just and efficient criminal justice systems; - to support the respect of international instruments and other standards; - to facilitate international law enforcement cooperation and judicial assistance.

2. Purpose of the assignment:

This position is located within the Counter-Terrorism Programme of UNICRI. In the framework of the project “Gender-based Discrimination and Prevention of Violent Extremism (PVE) in the Sahel”, the consultant is envisaged to provide expert and specialized support to UNICRI in the development and implementation of a research aimed at understanding how violent extremist groups are reshaping gender relations in urban and rural contexts in Mali, Mauritania, and Niger. The consultant will play a central role in the design of the methodological framework of the research, elaboration of research activities, analysis of data (gathered by local researchers) and drafting of the final report.

3. Specific tasks to be performed by the consultant:

Under the supervision of the Programme Officer, and in close collaboration with the project team, the incumbent will perform the following tasks:

- Conduct desk research to identify relevant gaps and priorities on gender and PVE in the three countries (Mali, Mauritania, and Niger); - Design the methodological framework of the research as well as research tools and activities, including the preparation of questionnaires for a survey, interviews and focus groups; - Liaise with local researchers to facilitate an organised collection of data in the target areas in the three countries, Mali, Mauritania, and Niger; - Analyse material, information and primary and secondary data collected by local researchers in the target countries; - Identify relevant guiding principles for future gender and P/CVE initiatives, projects and actions in the target area; - Elaborate and draft a research report based on analysis of data collected in the field, and revise the content by incorporating comments received by UNICRI personnel; - Perform other work-related duties as requested.

Qualifications/special skills Advanced university degree (i.e. Master or equivalent) in gender studies, social studies, criminology, security or other related fields is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two (2) additional years of professional work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. A minimum of five years of relevant working experience in designing and conducting research and analysis on topics related to gender and security is required; Previous work experience on issues pertaining to the prevention of violent extremism and/or gender in the relevant geographical region (with particular reference to the three target countries) is highly desirable; Previous relevant experience with the United Nations is desirable;

Languages For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of French is highly desirable.
