Result of Service The Research Consultant is expected to produce the following tangible outputs, which will be assessed based on their quality and timely completion:

A. Participate in the focal points meeting (depending on the date of the event) and draft follow-up documents. B. Coordinate the collection of data from focal points and conduct interviews as needed to support them in collecting the required data. C. Draft two policy briefs based on the findings of the analysis of the data collection (topics TBD).

Work Location Home-based with travel in West and Central Africa

Expected duration 46 working days

Duties and Responsibilities Under the supervision of the Programme Coordinator of ROSEN Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Smuggling of Migrants Unit, the Research Consultant will be responsible for performing the following tasks:

  • Plan and organise the data collection and analysis of the Niamey Declaration.
  • Directly liaise with national focal points and support them in collecting data.
  • Analyze qualitative and quantitative data received from national focal points.
  • Participate in the focal points meeting, conditional to the final date of the event.
  • Prepare two policy briefs resulting from the findings of the implementation of the Niamey Declaration.
  • Liaise and coordinate with government counterparts and external stakeholders.

    Qualifications/special skills An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in statistics, research, international relations, social science, law, political science, international relations or criminology, is required. A first level university degree in similar fields in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. A minimum of 5 years of relevant progressively responsible professional experience in the field of research and analysis (data collection), specific to trafficking in persons and smuggling of migrants, criminology, data collection for social science purposes or related field Experience in conducting secondary data review and semi-structured interviews is mandatory; Experience in assessments and studies report writing Knowledge and working experience in the Western and Central African (WCA) region Experience in liaising with Government authorities and other national /international institutions and donors

    Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this position, fluency in French and in English, with excellent drafting and communication skills, is required. Knowledge of another United Nations official language is an advantage. Knowledge of local languages is an advantage.
