Overview

Conduct research and manage communication on environmental topics in Mexico.

You have:

  • University degree (Bachelor’s) in International Relations, Public Policy, Law, Biology, Earth Science, or any related to Environment studies is required.
  • At least two (2) year of professional experience in research of environmental topics or environmental communication in any of the following topics: plastic pollution, climate change, sustainable education, agenda 2030 or biodiversity is required.
  • Fluency in Spanish is required.
  • Working knowledge of English or any other UN Language will be an advantage.
  • Experience working with the public sector or the UN System will be an advantage.

Result of Service 2. Objective.

The objective of the consultancy is to conduct research to develop analysis on air quality, climate change, pollution and marine litter, and other key topics for Mexico’s Office Programme of Work (PoW), providing relevant information for the communication strategy; also, support the coordination and organization of webinars, workshop, and seminaries (virtual and in presence). In addition, manage and feed the social networks.

Responsibilities Responsibilities and activities to be performed by the consultant will include, but are not limited to: o Conduct research of data and information of programmes and projects related air quality, climate change, pollution, marine and plastic pollution in Mexico at national and subnational level. o Mapping of entities and relevant contacts of the projects and programmes analysed and generate a data base o Collect and systematize information of stakeholders, such as Public Sector in the three levels of governments (Federal, State and Municipal governments), NGOs, Private Sector, Academia, Foundations relevant to plastic pollution, air quality and sustainable education in Mexico. o Coordinate the implementation of the Mechanism of Public Participation on Marine litter & Plastic Pollution. o Develop an analysis of the main inputs of every worktable for the Mechanism of Public Participation. o Coordinate the Breathelife campaign implementation together with SEMARNAT and PAHO Mexico. o Design workshops related to air quality, marine and plastic pollution, sustainable education, youth leaders, among others. o Support strengthening the implementation of the Cleans Seas and Global Commitment in Mexico. o Research, compile and summarize information relevant to plastic pollution, climate change, air quality environmental education, and other key topics of the PoW o Generate inputs and develop communication materials for the environmental communication strategies of the Mexico’s Office and its Programme of Work. o Participate in meetings and activities related to the organization of the Mechanism of Public Participation, clean seas, global commitment, UN youth Group, UN Comm Group and the BreatheLife campaign as required. o Manage and feeding Mexico´s Office social media accounts. o Draft meeting notes, briefings, and internal minutes as required. o Execute other tasks, as requested by UNEP Mexico.

Duties and Responsibilities 1. Purpose.

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The UNEP Latin America and the Caribbean Office (LAC Office), located in Panama City, works closely with the 33 countries of the region and its activities are integrated into the Medium Term Strategy and the Programme of Work approved by the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA).

UNEP Mexico collaborates with the Mexican government and other stakeholders in areas ranging from low carbon and resilient growth, resources efficiency, environmental assessments, to projects on ecosystems and climate change, and supports the country in its transition to a low carbon and green economy.

In addition, Mexico´s office will support Mexico´s government on the plastic agenda including the development of the National Action Plan, the National Source Inventory, and implementing a mechanism of public participation to include all sectors around this thematic. This last activity will contribute a starting point for negotiations at the country level, containing necessary elements to be discussed under the negotiations at UNEA5.2., as part of Mexico´s position. Moreover, UNEP will support the legislative plastic agenda trough webinars, workshops, sharing good practices, and with technical support providing a science-normative approach.

On the other hand, UNEP will support the air quality national agenda mainstreaming the first global assessment of air pollution legislation, as part of the activities to implement the BreatheLife campaign in Mexico together with the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT), the National Institute of Ecology and Climate Change (INECC) and Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) Mexico, promoting air quality governance as a critical point to attaining air quality standards and public health goals.

Additionally, UNEP will continue to play an active role in implementing the 2030 Agenda and organizing workshops, capacity building, and awareness-raising through communication campaigns and its social media strategy. UN Environment campaigns are fundamental to communicate the importance of environmental sustainability, such as #CleanSeas, #BreatheLife and the Global Commitment need to be mainstreamed among different sectors of Mexico and the campaign #WildforLife.

In this extent, UNEP will need the support of a consultant to assist coordination of webinars, workshops, seminaries, and conduct research and analysis to ensure the fulfil plastic pollution and air quality agenda´s implementation; as well as to formulate and disseminate relevant environmental information and communication products to promote UNEP Mexico´s Office work at national level.

The Consultant will be supervised by UNEP Mexico Representative Officer in Mexico and will work Monday to Friday, 40 hours per week, full-time at UNEP Mexico’s Office.

Qualifications/special skills ACADEMIC: - University degree (Bachelor’s) in International Relations, Public Policy, Law, Biology, Earth Science, or any related to Environment studies is required.

PROFESSIONAL: At least two (2) year of professional experience in research of environmental topics or environmental communication in any of the following topics: plastic pollution, climate change, sustainable education, agenda 2030 or biodiversity is required. Experience working with the public sector or the UN System will be an advantage.

Languages Fluency in Spanish is required. Working knowledge of English or any other UN Language will be an advantage.
