Overview

You have:

  • A Master's degree in engineering with a specialization in Transportation or Road Safety area is required.
  • A minimum of 2 years of professional work experience in the field of research is required.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft office application is required.
  • Fluency in English and Arabic is required.
  • Knowledge of transport & road safety issues is desirable.

Result of Service

The IC will support the review and enhancement of road safety measures in several Arab countries, ensure alignment with international standards and global plans for road safety including but not limited to the Global Plan for the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021–2030. This includes implementing a review of road design standards, building a digital form for crash investigation, advocate for policy alternations, building capacities of concerned officials to use modern technologies for road safety management, among others. His/her role in this road safety project will lead to the development of updated, evidence-based road safety tools that prioritize safety and accessibility for all road users including through capacity-building initiatives and stakeholder engagement. Ultimately, these efforts will contribute to the overarching goal of halving road traffic deaths and injuries by 2030, as outlined in the Global Plan for the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021–2030.

Duties and Responsibilities

Background The Global Plan for the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021–2030, endorsed by the UN General Assembly, aims to halve road traffic deaths and injuries by 2030. It emphasizes a Safe System approach, focusing on safer roads, vehicles, road users, and post-crash care. Infrastructure must be designed to minimize risks for all road users, particularly the most vulnerable, and support multimodal mobility, including walking, cycling, and public transport. ESCWA supports several Arab countries in reviewing and updating their road safety policies and measures through various project that are targeting different areas of the road safety domain from road design to data collection and analysis to awareness and policy making, among others. Objective The objective of this assignment is to support the review and enhancement of road safety measures in several Arab countries, ensure alignment with international standards and global plans for road safety including but not limited to the Global Plan for the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021–2030. This includes implementing a review of road design standards, building a digital form for crash investigation, advocate for policy alternations, building capacities of concerned officials to use modern technologies for road safety management, among others. Duties and responsibilities The IC will be required to do the following tasks: - Research, compiles, analyses, summarizes, and presents basic information/data related to activities on Road Safety issues in the Arab region. - Systematically follows through and retrieves, highlights and compiles information on Road Safety in a wide variety of information sources; prepares inputs on the subject as required. - Participate in the delivery of required activities on Road Safety policies. - Prepare statistical tables and graphs and assist in the preparation of presentations and background substantive material on Road - Safety related deliverables. - Undertake specific analyses on selected subjects related to Road Safety. - Develop manuals, policy papers, guides, to use certain road safety tools. - Assist in Project management tasks. - Carry out any other related duties as required.

Qualifications/special skills

A Master's degree in engineering with a specialization in Transportation or Road Safety area is required. All candidates must submit a copy of the required educational degree. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed. A minimum of 2 years of professional work experience in the field of research is required. Proficiency in Microsoft office application is required. Knowledge of transport & road safety issues is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat; and Arabic is a working language of ESCWA. For this position, fluency in English and Arabic is required. Note: “Fluency” equals a rating of ‘fluent’ in all four areas (speak, read, write, and understand) and “Knowledge of” equals a rating of ‘confident’ in two of the four areas.
