Org. Setting and Reporting The mandate of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) is to promote sustainable and inclusive development and regional connectivity in the Asian and Pacific region. ESCAP’s role as a regional development arm of the United Nations Secretariat is to support its membership with policy oriented research and analysis, normative support and technical assistance and capacity building, to respond to the development priorities and changing needs of the Asian and Pacific region.

The ESCAP Subregional Office for South and South-West Asia, which covers Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Islamic Republic of Iran, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Turkey, is the subregional platform to promote regional cooperation for inclusive and sustainable economic and social development in South and South-West Asia .

The position is located in the Subregional Office for South and South-West Asia Office located in New Delhi, India. The incumbent reports to the Head, ESCAP Subregional Office for South and South-West Asia.

Responsibilities Under the direct supervision of the Head, ESCAP Subregional Office for South and South-West Asia, the incumbent is required to perform the following functions:

  • Assists in identifying and monitoring substantive aspects of the work of the ESCAP-SSWA in the member States especially macroeconomic trends and patterns and challenges for implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.
  • Researches, extracts and compiles basic information and technical data on SDG related programmes/projects and related topics and issues.
  • Sorts, consolidates, extracts and processes data and enter into relevant database.
  • Assists in monitoring developments/issues on socio-economic areas as assigned by collecting, selecting, analysing and compiling materials from multiple sources, e.g., relevant databases online and offline; prepares background materials for assessment/working papers, studies, policy briefs and reports.
  • Assembles original statistical material; adjusts reported data from different sources and load data into computerized database system.
  • Assists in the evaluation and examination of data sets for accuracy, clarity and validity.
  • Prepares a variety of reports, inputs, presentations, tables, lists, graphs, charts and/or diagrams for information and review by senior officers.
  • Prepares abstracts/bibliographic descriptions for inclusion in documents, articles, books and publications.
  • Supports other activities undertaken by the Office including organization of workshops and meetings.
  • Responds to requests for information on SSWA countries from ESCAP headquarters.
  • Takes notes and drafts executive summaries of meetings.
  • Performs other related work as required.

Education High school diploma or equivalent is required.

Job - Specific Qualification A recognized first-level university degree is desirable.

A test or examination in research and analytical skills covering developmental dimensions is desirable.

Work Experience A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in research and analysis across various areas of sustainable development or related area in the South and South-West Asian context is required.

Experience in the United Nations Common System or international organizations is desirable.

Working experience in the South and South-West Asian subregion as demonstrated by living and working in the region is desirable

Publications in the field of macroeconomics/cross border connectivity/empowering gender is desirable.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.

Must have passed the United Nations Global General Service Test (GGST) at Headquarters or an equivalent locally-administered test at Offices Away from Headquarters.

This is a temporary position and will be available for six month initially. If selected, an internal candidate will be on temporary assignment to the post; an external candidate will initially be offered a temporary appointment. Any extension of appointment is subject to satisfactory performance and continued availability of the post.
