Overview

Serve in the UNDSS Global Security Information Centre supporting crisis management.

You have:

  • 3-5 years in political or international affairs, public information/journalism, military, police, security, civil affairs, humanitarian affairs, human rights, crisis operations and management, or related field is required.
  • Expert-level knowledge of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, social media, and others.
  • Demonstrated understanding of operations relevant to UNDSS; technical capabilities or knowledge relevant or transferrable to UNDSS procedures and rules.
  • Ability to operate effectively across organizational boundaries and establish effective partnerships in a multicultural environment.
  • Proven interpersonal skills; good spoken and written communication skills, including ability to prepare clear reports.
  • Willingness to travel within the area of operations and operate in potentially hazardous conditions.

The advertised assignment is located in the UNDSS Global Security Information Centre (GSIC), Division of Field Operations (DFO). The incumbent will be part of the team mandated to provide UNDSS leadership with a 24/7 common situational awareness overview to support coordination and operational planning and facilitate crisis management. The incumbent reports to the Chief of the GSIC.

The GSIC provides decision-making support to UN senior leadership and global situational awareness. The Center is an integrated information and crisis hub providing cross-pillar analytics, situational awareness, and support to risk and crisis management. Its products support senior-level decision-making and information sharing across the UN Security Management System, UNSMS.

Under the direct supervision of Chief of the Global Security Information Centre (GSIC), the UN Volunteer :

· Serves on shift in the UNDSS Global Security Information Centre (GSIC), a 24/7 operation, receiving, evaluating and disseminating information and reports from various sources.

· Alerts appropriate UNDSS Regional Desks to threat and security developments worldwide.

· Collects information from UNDSS field security and Regional Desk officers at Headquarters.

· Drafts and timely disseminates integrated reports, including daily and weekly situation reports, within the UN Security Management System (UNSMS) about significant developments.

· Drafts incident ("flash") reports about important, urgent events and new developments affecting the UNSMS.

· Performs other assignments as required.

Furthermore, UN Volunteers are encouraged to integrate the UN Volunteers programme mandate within their assignment and promote voluntary action through engagement with communities in the course of their work. As such, UN Volunteers should dedicate a part of their working time to some of the following suggested activities :

· Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day).

· Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country.

· Provide annual and end of assignment self- reports on UN Volunteer actions, results and opportunities.

· Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.

· Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers.

· Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering, or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.

· Professionalism: demonstrated understanding of operations relevant to UNDSS; technical capabilities or knowledge relevant or transferrable to UNDSS procedures and rules; discretion, political sensitivity, diplomacy and tact to deal with clients; ability to apply good judgement; ability to liaise and coordinate with a range of different actors, especially in senior positions; where appropriate, high degree of autonomy, personal initiative and ability to take ownership; resourcefulness and willingness to accept wide responsibilities and ability to work independently under established procedures; ability to manage information objectively, accurately and confidentially; responsive and client-oriented.

· Flexibility: adaptability and ability to live and work in potentially hazardous and remote conditions, involving physical hardship and little comfort; to operate independently in austere environments for protracted periods; willingness to travel within the area of operations and to transfer to other duty stations within the area of operations as necessary.

· Genuine commitment towards the principles of voluntary engagement, which includes solidarity, compassion, reciprocity and self-reliance; and commitment towards UNDSS’s mission and vision, as well as to the UN Core Values.

The UN Volunteer will be granted access to UN Confidential reports. Such access will be contingent upon compliance with ST/SGB/2007/6 and the signing of appropriate confidentiality or non-disclosure agreements during onboarding.

As this is a national UN Volunteer assignment, the UN Volunteer will be responsible for arranging his/her own housing and other living essentials.
