UNICEF has the accountability through the Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC) to lead (or co- lead) in several key technical areas of humanitarian emergency response. The IASC is the primary mechanism for inter-agency coordination of humanitarian assistance. That accountability requires UNICEF to lead the coordination of humanitarian sectors (called Clusters) in the areas of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene; Nutrition; Education; and one sub-Cluster of the Global Protection Cluster - Child Protection (CP) and referred to as an Area of Responsibility (AoR). UNICEF’s accountability to those three Clusters and AoR is managed through the Geneva based Global Cluster Coordination Unit (GCCU) within its Office of Emergency Programmes (EMOPS).

To support cluster wide decision making, advocacy and guidance development, UNICEF (co)led Global Clusters and AoR all conduct operational data collection and analysis across country clusters, knowledge management, communication through their website and other channels.

All global clusters have websites that operate under a centralized system, hosted externally to UNICEF and based on Drupal content management systems, e.g. https://washcluster.net/ (the other Cluster websites can be navigated to from that page). The substantive content of those websites is managed by focal points within the humanitarian Clusters and AoR teams; development and maintenance are through an external supplier. The websites are also increasingly serving as a point of data entry and compilation for analysis of results and trends over time for strategic decision-making. These are notably linked to reliably monitoring staffing of cluster teams on the ground, deployment of field support and surge, performance of CCPM and analysis of the results.

How can you make a difference?

Under the supervision of the Information Management Specialist in GCCU, the intern will provide key support to the Global Cluster Coordination Unit in information and knowledge management.

Tasks and Domains of Responsibility:

1. Information Management

  • Contribute to reporting tasks and performance monitoring of the global and field level coordination (e.g. HR mapping, team field deployments, and Cluster Coordination Performance Monitoring (CCPM)).

2. Websites enhancement project (4 cluster websites and 1 intercluster). Includes:

  • Provide programme management support to the GCCU websites development and maintenance project.
  • Coordinate with UNICEF Led cluster’s focal points and the web development vendor.
  • Support towards strengthened business analysis to include coordination of responses to the clusters’ requirements and the delivery of the website services and solutions.
  • Attend and support the preparation of meetings with the vendor and the cluster’s focal point.
  • Support Quality Assurance testing efforts including manual and automated tests.
  • Support the preparation of technical and product documentation and training material.
  • Monitor the web development work against the planned timeline.

3. Knowledge Management

  • Support management of the GCCU websites, SharePoint folders including file management and organising the archive folders.
  • Support the streamlining and functionality of internal and external facing knowledge resources including the SharePoint and corporate website.
  • Support the learning channels on the Learning Management System for clusters and intercluster

4. Perform other related tasks as requested by the supervisor

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • Be enrolled or recent graduate (within last two years) of an undergraduate or advanced degree programme in information systems, information management, computer science, social sciences, geography, epidemiology or similar;
  • Keen interest in analytics, information management, visualization, and performance optimization;
  • Experience in web design/development using Drupal CMS is required;
  • Knowledge of key website infrastructure technologies (e.g. DNS, SSL, hosting, cloud computing, programming languages);
  • Knowledge of key business tools (e.g. Excel, PowerPivot, PowerPoint);
  • Knowledge of analytics tools (e.g. Microsoft SQL, PowerBI, Tableau);
  • Strong knowledge of data management techniques, quantitative analysis and methods will be an asset;
  • Strong analytical, problem solving, and synthesis skills are an asset;
  • Fluency in English language (oral and written) is required;
  • Ability to work effectively in a multi-cultural environment;
  • Ability to manage the available time and resources and to work to tight deadlines, with minimal supervision;
  • Be at least 18 years old;
  • Have strong academic performance as demonstrated by recent university or institution records or, if not available, a reference letter from an academic supervisor; and
  • Have no immediate relatives (e.g. father, mother, brother, sister) working in any UNICEF office and have no other relatives in the line of authority that the intern will report to.

CONDITIONS OF SERVICE

Stipend: In accordance to UNICEF's guidelines, selected intern will provided a monthly stipend during the internship. Actual stipend amount will be based on the location of the selected intern. There is no expectancy of employment at the end of the internship.

Insurance: For Geneva based interns, UNICEF will not be responsible for costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during the intern's service, whether on or off UNICEF premises. Therefore, the selected candidate must provide proof of enrollment in a health/accident plan with coverage in Switzerland prior to starting his/her internship. Interns are subject to Swiss Law on Medical Insurance (LAMal) and will be required to enroll into a Swiss insurance under LAMal scheme as soon as they receive their Legitimation Card or to request an exemption from LAMal office provided that their insurance is equivalent to or has a better coverage than an insurance under LAMal scheme. More details will be communicated to a selected candidate in due time.

Mandatory Courses: Selected intern will be requested to complete online mandatory courses prior to commencement of the internship.

Location: Selected intern will ideally be located between UTC-4 and UTC+4 timezones to facilitate communication with the supervisor who is located in Geneva, Switzerland.
