We are looking for Regional Climate & Environment Adviser who will lead and coordinate the implementation of NRC ALAR’s Climate and Environment Strategic Objective and ambitions, with a particular emphasis on strengthening NRC’s response in a context of Climate change. Through research, piloting and testing, develop new responses that aims to strengthen the capacity of the displacement affected to withstand shocks and stresses related to climate change and environmental degradation. The Regional Climate & Environment Adviser will support Country Offices to include environmental considerations as part of their program design and implementation, with the objective of reducing NRC’s environmental footprint (SE4) and addressing the impacts of climate change on displacement-affected people (SO3).

Background The climate and environment crisis is the defining challenge of our generation. As a displacement organisation, the climate and environment crisis is of major concern to NRC both as a cause of new displacements and because of the new risks it presents to people already displaced. In the current strategy period, NRC is prioritising to strengthen its response to address the impacts of climate change on the displacement affected and to reduce our own environmental footprint.

What you will do:

  • Responsible for providing strategic advice, technical support and capacity building support to the Country Offices and the Regional Office.
  • Advise the Country Offices for implementing programs that are sensitive to climate and environment, including advocacy and behaviour changes.
  • Responsible for ensuring that best practices for climate adaptation and mitigation are identified, documented, and disseminated both within the region and beyond.
  • Technical supervision of technical staff at CO level providing relevant guidance and follow-up project development and implementation and contribute to CO-level recruitment of technical staff.
  • Work closely with regional Core Competency (CC) Advisors to ensure relevant technical guidance and project design take climate and environmental dimensions into account.
  • Contribute to the NRC global development of climate related programming, through collaborative working with and contribution to the NRC Global Lead for Climate and Environment, and by sharing learning and expertise with the HO level and other Regions.
  • Facilitating and stimulating an environment conducive to innovative environmental friendly and climate smart approaches for humanitarian response. Keeping informed on innovation insights and analysis of relevance to climate and environment.
  • Ensure this knowledge is integrated into the systems and culture of the organisation at country and regional levels.
  • Contribute to development and delivery of induction and training provision of CO staff in relation to own thematic area, working collaboratively with Learning & Development and other colleagues.
  • Work in partnership with the regional and country office advocacy leads to identify and develop regional advocacy issues related to climate and environment and relevant cross-cutting issues.

What you will bring:

  • In-depth knowledge and expertise of climate and environment related to humanitarian response, with expertise within climate adaptation
  • Several years of documented experience working within climate and/or environment field
  • Extensive experience in programming in complex and volatile contexts with preference for previous experience in Asia and Latin America
  • Experience of strategic approaches to programme development
  • Experience of developing practical tools and resources
  • Experience of programme quality assessments, programme development and delivery
  • Understanding of and commitment to organisational learning, and the role and contribution of M&E to quality management and development
  • Understanding of, and commitment to working collaboratively with technical and operational colleagues within a matrix structure, including capacity building
  • Experience of delivering learning and development as part of quality improvement and capacity building
  • Fluency in English both written and verbal
  • Spanish language is an asset
