The Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action identified 12 critical areas of concern where urgent action was required to ensure greater equality and opportunities among the sexes. Women and the environment is one of these 12 critical areas of concern. For its 25th anniversary, Member States provided progress reports on the status of implementation of the action. All national reports submitted were reviewed with the purpose of extracting information pertaining to the status of women and girls in environmental management and governance. UNEP's Gender and Safeguards Unit is now looking to conduct regional analyses using the review reports. The aim is to get a overview of the status of gender mainstreaming and women's empowerment in the various regions across the globe.
