UNHCR Kenya provides protection and assistance, and facilitates access to durable solutions, for nearly 550,000 refugees and asylum-seekers in Kenya from Somalia, South Sudan, the Democratic

The Republic of the Congo, and a range of other countries from across the region. Persons of concern reside primarily in the camps and settlements in Dadaab, Kakuma, and Kalobeyei, with approximately 16% of the population residing in Nairobi and other urban areas. Approximately 76% of the population are women and children, and around 30% are children and youth between the ages of 14 and 25 years.

UNHCR invites applications from qualified candidates including females to apply for the position of Refugee UN Volunteer to support the implementation of the key strategic objectives. The UN Volunteer will be based in Nairobi, working with urban communities.

Based on principles of age, gender, and diversity mainstreaming, UNHCR works with youth and with the community at large to enhance the protection space by strengthening their skills and capacities in order to respond to their needs. In line with principles of age, gender and diversity mainstreaming, the active participation of youth in developing activities and programs is essential. The UN Volunteer will work jointly with UNHCR and partners to strengthen youth activities, empower youth, mainstream youth programming,

The position will be subject to review at the end of duration to examine the progress made and determine the way forward.

Under the direct supervision of the Associate Child Protection Officer, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

· Conduct a mapping exercise of the current youth programmes, refugee led organizations, and programmatic gaps in close collaboration with partners; make recommendations regarding enhancing youth programming. · Support the refugee led organizations and community-based organizations sub-working group in organizing meetings and following up action points as a focal person. · Support the UNHCR Protection Unit, partners, and youth-led organizations in developing the capacities of adolescents and youth including skills training to help youth transition better into the job markets. · Advocate for refugee youth inclusion in the national system. · Assist in promoting meaningful participation of youth of different gender and background, including through regular focus group discussions, working group meetings, and creating forums for youth engagement and advocacy. · Support other Community-Based Protection, outreach, and related activities, including in partnership with youth-led refugee & host CBOs. · Submit monthly reports of activities which will be used at the Nairobi level to produce a monthly SitRep. · Any other related tasks as may be required or assigned by the supervisor.

Results/expected outputs:

As an active UNHCR team member, efficient, timely, responsive, client-friendly and high-quality support rendered to UNHCR and its beneficiaries in the accomplishment of her/his functions, including:

· Improved reporting on youth activities (e.g. report on the effectiveness of current youth programmes and programmatic gaps; reports from FGDs; minutes of working group meetings). · Increased participation of refugee youth in programmes and decision-making.

Familiarity with programming processes · Strong organizational, interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills · Good interpersonal skills: he/she must be able to relate well with others, dictate responsibilities, offer support and constructive feedback · Basic understanding of the UNHCR mandate · Excellent oral and written skills; excellent drafting, formulation, reporting skills · Accuracy and professionalism in document production and editing · Culturally and socially sensitive; ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a range of partners, including grassroots community members, religious and youth organizations, and authorities at different levels; familiarity with tools and approaches of communications for development · Ability to work and adapt professionally in a multicultural team of international and national personnel · Solid overall computer literacy, including proficiency in various MS Office applications (Excel, Word, PPT, Outlook, Teams etc.) and internet; familiarity with database management; and office technology equipment · Self-motivated, ability to work with minimum supervision; ability to work with tight deadlines; · Sound security awareness; · Have affinity with or interest in youth activities, volunteerism as a mechanism for durable development, and the UN System.

Despite some security concerns, Nairobi is a good duty station for families with good medical facilities. Recreational facilities, schools and hotels are of international standard. Good and affordable housing is available, as well as good banking facilities in addition to unlimited access to communication means, such as internet, telephone SIM cards, etc.

Security Considerations

Nairobi is in UN Security Phase 1, but politically instigated demonstrations and riots may occur at any time. Like many other large cities, a high sense of vigilance and alertness is required in addition to endemic outbreaks.

As this is a Refugee UN Volunteer assignment, the UN Volunteer will be responsible for arranging his/her own housing and other living essentials.
