Across 190 countries and territories, we work for every child, everywhere, every day, to build a better world for everyone.

And we never give up.

For every child, hope

The UNICEF Latin America and Caribbean Regional Office is based in in Panama, operating in 36 territories, including 24 country offices.

UNICEF works to put the rights and well-being of the most disadvantaged children at the heart of the social, political, and economic agenda, in line with our equity focus, working across our organization and with our partners in government, civil society and the private sector to support shifts in public policy, fuel social engagement, and increase investment for children.

Emergencies have grown increasingly complex, more frequent and often with less time between them to allow affected people to rebuild their resilience, UNICEF remains dedicated to providing life-saving assistance to children affected by disasters, and to protecting their rights in all circumstances. In health and nutrition, water and sanitation, protection, education and HIV/AIDS, UNICEF’s Core Commitments for Children in Humanitarian Action (CCCs), the basis for all UNICEF’s emergency operations, are more than a mission statement – they are a humanitarian imperative.

The first hours after an emergency are crucial. The earlier we start raising funds for the emergency, the more we will raise. Being up and running within one or two hours after an emergency strikes is both possible and something UNICEF strives to achieve. To maximize fundraising after emergencies that have occurred on English-speaking countries, the Latin American and the Caribbean Regional Office is looking for a certified English to Spanish and Portuguese translator.

How can you make a difference?

Under the overall guidance of the RSC Emergency Focal Point on-call, certified English-Spanish-Portuguese translator is sought to provide his/her services right after an emergency occurs, subsequent to the release of official information by the organization HQ and the need for raising funds in LAC Spanish-speaking country offices has been confirmed.

The consultant will receive a translation request from a PFP emergency focal point and is expected to deliver the translated document within 1-3 hours after receiving the request.

Specific Tasks:

The consultant must be available to be contacted by an emergency focal point after a state of emergency has been declared and fundraising has been requested by UNICEF HQ. This may be out of office hours. The incumbent:

  • Receives an email from one of the emergency focal points, announcing the emergency and containing the document to be translated.
  • Remains available to be contacted at his/her mobile by the emergency focal point to ensure that he/she is aware of the event and has received the document to be translated. Translates the document (which will consist of a maximum of 4 pages) and will deliver the product in a 3-hour timeframe maximum.
  • Will be available in the proceeding days to continue to translation work that may be necessary depending on the size of the emergency.
