Overview

Ensure operational readiness of communications systems for UN personnel in Djibouti.

You have:

  • Secondary Education is required.
  • University degree in Electronics with Radio/IT Specialization or relevant field will be given due consideration, but it is not a requirement.
  • Minimum of 4 years (with secondary education) or 1 years (with university degree) with relevant experience in telecommunications, with expertise in HF/VHF/UHF technologies and equipment.
  • Proven experience in antennas, grounding, low voltage systems, and familiarity with tools such as multimeters and spectrum analyzers is required.
  • Previous experience with the UN telecommunications system, national or international NGOs, and/or government organizations is an asset.
  • Experience in the use of computers, office software packages (MS Word, Excel, etc), database packages, and web-based management systems such as ERP is an asset.
  • Fluency in French is required.
  • Fluency in at least one of the local languages (Somali, Afar, or Arabic) is required.

Contract

This is a NPSA-4 contract. This kind of contract is known as National Personnel Services Agreement. It is normally only for nationals. It usually requires 4 years of experience, depending on education. More about NPSA-4 contracts.

Background

The United Nations Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) provides leadership, operational support, and oversight for the UN’s security management system, facilitating the safe and efficient delivery of UN programs and operations in Djibouti. This role directly supports the Security Operations Center (SOC), ensuring 24/7 operational readiness and reliability of communications systems critical to UN personnel's safety in Djibouti.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the general supervision of the CSA/DSA/FSCO and direct supervision of the Field Security Assistant , the Radio Technician/Operator will help monitor communication systems to support the safety and security of UN personnel and operations by performing the following tasks:

  1. Install, maintain, and repair telecommunications equipment across all UN agencies in Djibouti.
  2. Ensure the 24/7 operational readiness of the Security Operations Center (SOC).
  3. Monitor field missions, providing urgent support as needed, regardless of time.
  4. Visit UN agency offices for preventive and corrective maintenance of communications systems.
  5. Provide training to UN Radio Operators and staff on standard UN equipment and protocols.
  6. Demonstrate knowledge of radio systems, including HF/VHF/UHF, and IT applications.
  7. Contribute to knowledge networks and professional communities.
  8. The incumbent performs other duties within their functional profile as deemed necessary for the efficient functioning ofthe Office and the Organization.
