Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located in Bamako in the Strategic Communication and Public Information Office of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA). The Radio Producer will act as the Chief of the Radio Unit and will report to the Director of Strategic Communication & Public Information Office.

Responsibilities Within delegated authority, the Radio Producer at this level will be responsible for the following duties:

•Supervises the radio unit of the Mission and ensures coverage of activities related to the mission as well as political, social and cultural events as they relate to the Mission's mandate in the country; responsible for all aspects of production of radio programmes, as well as public service announcements, series, news stories, interviews, features and documentaries for local, regional, and international broadcasts in line with overall communication strategy; •Devises an appropriate national, regional and international distribution and/or broadcasting system for mission's radio products and programs including through digital platforms in line with the mission priorities; •Develops and maintains working relations with the media sector in the host country, including managing production and broadcast partnerships and capacity building programmes as appropriate; •Supervises editorial sections of the radio unit and ensures coverage of activities related to the mission's mandate as well as significant political, social and cultural events in the mission area, as appropriate, and ensures that editorial focus is consistent with other components, programmes and products of the public information team; •Provides raw audio material for (a) mission products, including for community outreach, (b) internal mission use such as training of mission personnel, (c) Headquarters, and (d) national and international media as appropriate; •Ensures posting of audio, video and print content on web and social and digital media platforms, including linking with Headquarter digital and social media platforms; •Prepares or oversees preparation of a diverse range of information products in support of major communications campaigns; •Drafts or oversees the drafting of scripts prepared by junior officers; evaluates results and impact of communications activities; reports on developments, trends and attitudes regarding the mission; •Coordinates and works with other units of the Public Information office to ensure consistency in messaging and conformity with Mission's overall communications strategy; •Determines needs, resources, equipment and prepares budgets for the Radio Unit; •Solves technical production and broadcasting challenges and develops solutions; analyzes the work plan of the unit and prepares its budget based on the work plan; •Monitors and evaluates effectiveness of radio broadcasts and programming, including using analytic tools, and including social media; •Prepares periodic status reports on radio strategy implementation; •Participates in recruitment and supervision of staff; develops capacity building programmes for national staff and trains and mentor national staff on a continuous basis; •Performs other duties, as assigned.

Competencies Professionalism: State-of-the-art knowledge in the field of radio, broadcast journalism and/or public information. Professional ability to record and edit audio; ability to copy edit..Ability to develop communications products for global audiences and to address a wide range of issues related to UN work and the Mission’s mandate. Demonstrated capacity to take the lead on major public information radio campaigns; substantial and diverse experience in all facets of communications and public information; knowledge of political trends, public attitudes, local conditions and developments, and ability to assess effectively, the climate for successfully achieving agreed objectives; understanding of the UN system; ability to rapidly analyze and integrate diverse information from varied sources; Ability to lead and direct others in the execution of radio programmes; ability to adapt and be innovative as new communications challenges arise; Ensures development and implementation of strategic audiovisual electronic-communication plans for section's online Digital presence, implements section's digital communications and social media strategies based on studying the work on the ground of the Mission and audience behavior and interests, to provide a consistent and compelling online presence for the Mission's mandate implementations and key messages. Shows pride in work and in achievements; demonstrates professional competence and mastery of subject matter; is conscientious and efficient in meeting commitments, observing deadlines and achieving results; is motivated by professional rather than personal concerns; shows persistence when faced with difficult problems or challenges; remains calm in stressful situations. Commitment to implementing the goal of gender equality by ensuring the equal participation and full involvement of women and men in all areas of work force.

Communication: Speaks and writes clearly and effectively; listens to others, correctly interprets messages from others and responds appropriately; asks questions to clarify, and exhibits interest in having two-way communication; tailors language, tone, style and format to match audience; demonstrates openness in sharing information and keeping people informed.

Technological awareness: Fully conversant with rapidly evolving communication technologies; outstanding knowledge of the operating characteristics of a wide-range of radio equipment used in all aspects of production, principles and techniques of radio production and current trends and developments in radio, broadcasting and multimedia technologies; understanding of computer assisted systems for production, automation, recording, scheduling, music selection, library, etc.; knowledge of computerized audio editing. Production and programme automation systems. Adept at research, and at planning, writing, producing and editing a program or series of programs.

Education Advanced university degree (Master's or equivalent) in journalism/communications, international relations, political science, broadcasting, or other related fields. A first level university degree with a combination of additional two years of relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree

Work Experience At least seven years of progressively responsible experience as a radio producer.

Proven experience in planning, writing, on air-presentation is required.

Experience in overseeing the production of radio programmes and supervising production staff is required.

Communication-related work experience in a conflict or post-conflict environment is required.

Experience in international broadcasting is desirable.

Work experience in the United Nations common system (inclusive of peacekeeping or political missions; UN agencies, funds and programmes); NGOs; regional organizations; or international development or humanitarian programmes is an advantage.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised fluency in English and French (both oral and written) is required.
