How can you make a difference?

Summary of key functions/accountabilities:

  • To maintain voice/data radio network between Zonal-offices and ACO and elsewhere as required on HF/VHF ensuring prompt transmission in full respect of set priorities and network procedures.
  • Monitor and track all road missions and movements within area of responsibility. Track the location of national staff during work hours, and international staff at all times.
  • Issue security advisories and conduct head checks and daily radio checks as required. Monitors emergency calls and communicates with appropriate UNICEF and/or inter-agency communication or security focal points. Maintains the radio room log book.
  • Maintains the radio room equipment in a functional manner. Reports all defects. Monitors, records and issues keys and other equipment from radio room as required.
  • Assists with managing a security related incident in accordance with radio room SOPs.
  • Maintain a 24-hour work schedule, work over the weekends and public holidays ensuring that traffic received during these periods are passed on to concerned officials whenever necessary.
  • Inform the supervisor and/or other senior staff of Zonal Office concerned of applicable urgent messages at all times.
  • Carry out any other relevant functions as assigned by supervisor.

Requirements for Radio Operator (GS4) level:

  • Completion of secondary education is required, preferably supplemented by technical or university courses related to the work of the organization.
  • 4 years experience as Radio Operator preferably in a large communication network. Ability to operate HF/VHF/voice radios, radio telex system operating on various programmes such as digital data transmission.
  • Developing country work experience and/or familiarity with emergency is considered an asset.
  • Fluency in English and local languages of the duty station (Dari and/or Pashto) is required.
