Overview

Develop and implement effective communication and outreach strategies.

You have:

  • Master’s degree or equivalent in communication, linguistics, public relations, journalism or relevant field is required; a first-level university degree in combination with relevant training and/or professional experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree.
  • At least 5 years of professional work experience at national or international level in public information and reporting.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English is required.
  • Working knowledge of French or Arabic is desirable.
  • Experience in media, including production and editing.
  • Excellent oral and written skills; excellent researching, drafting, formulation and reporting skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; culturally and socially sensitive; ability to work inclusively with a range of partners.
  • Ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national personnel.

Contract

This is a UNV International Specialist contract. This kind of contract is known as International UN Volunteer. It is normally internationally recruited only. More about UNV International Specialist contracts.

Eligibility criteria

Minimum age: 25 years old. Nationals of the country of assignment are not eligible, except the assignments in Headquarters duty stations.

Description of task

Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of the Associate Public Information Officer or his/her designated mandated representative(s), the UN Volunteer Public Information Specialist will:

Contribute to the development and implementation of communication and outreach/advocacy strategies and plans

  • Design, develop, and implement communication and outreach/advocacy strategies and plans tailored to the different stakeholders;
  • Monitor and analyse print, visual and social media and prepare reports.

Contribute to the development and dissemination of communication materials globally

  • Develop and produce communication materials, including briefing materials, press releases, newsletters and articles and support their dissemination through effective channels;
  • Support the editing, proofreading and review process of publications and other communication material produced by UNICRI;
  • Translate documents into English from one or more of the other official languages of the United Nations. (In particular, Arabic and French);
  • Design and production of videos, photo-reportages and raising awareness campaign on UNICRI’s work;
  • Identify relevant stakeholders to be engaged;
  • Prepare related correspondence, talking points and background information;
  • Support the organization of roundtable discussions and interviews.

Contribute to UNICRI’s web/ online activities

  • Support the management of UNICRI’s websites, including developing the design and content;
  • Contribute to the management of UNICRI’s social media, including preparing posts in line with the corporate social media policy.

Facilitate knowledge building and sharing

  • Identify and synthesize best practices and lessons learned from UNICRI’s programmes and ensure exchange of information;
  • Support the organization of events;
  • Liaise with and provide support to the partners and experts involved in the events of UNICRI;

  • Any other related tasks as may be required or assigned by the supervisor.

At least 5 years of professional work experience at national or international level in public information and reporting. The following experience is also required:

  • Extensive experience in media;
  • Experience in document production and editing;
  • Experience in the use of social media and in websites management;
  • Experience in the production of audiovisual materials.

Experience working in the UN system or other similar international organization is desirable.

Skills and knowledge:

  • Excellent oral and written skills; excellent researching, drafting, formulation and reporting skills.
  • Solid overall computer literacy, including proficiency in various MS Office applications and email/internet; familiarity with database management; and office technology equipment;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; culturally and socially sensitive; ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a range of partners, including media professionals, grassroots organizations, religious and youth organizations, and authorities at different levels;
  • Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a challenging environment; ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national personnel;
  • Self-motivated, ability to work with minimum supervision; ability to work with tight deadlines;
  • Have affinity with or interest in UNICRI and in particular topics related to crime prevention and justice, volunteerism as a mechanism for durable development, and the UN System.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English is required;
  • Working knowledge of French or Arabic is desirable.
