Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located in the Office of the Under-Secretary-General of the Department of Global Communications (DGC).

The Office of the Under-Secretary-General is responsible for the overall direction and strategic management of United Nations communications, and for establishing departmental policies and guidelines.

The incumbent reports to the Special Assistant to the Under-Secretary-General for Global Communications.

This position will be available effective 1 February 2021 for six months with the possibility of extension.

Responsibilities Within delegated authority, the Public Information Officer will be responsible for the following duties: - Identifies and compiles research and open source findings on misinformation and disinformation relevant to complex strategic communications campaigns, including Verified, climate action, and hate speech; - Sets up and manages a UN inter-agency coordination mechanism to align UN misinformation communications efforts; - Convenes experts and relevant UN officials working in the field of misinformation to inform DGC communications work on misinformation; and to advise the USG on the Global Code of Conduct to promote integrity in public information, as per the Secretary-General’s report on Our Common Agenda - Compiles reports from DGC field offices and other UN field operations on misinformation trends, developments, and attitudes regarding the UN - Drafts complex material for internal and external purposes on DGC misinformation work. - Contributes to monitoring of results and impact of misinformation communications activities. - Makes presentations to groups on DGC misinformation activities as required, and serves as OUSG focal point for preparation of materials, including talking points, for briefings, interviews, seminars, lectures, conferences, and public events related to misinformation for the USG and Secretary-General as requested. - Builds information networks; plans and oversees maintenance of accessible information materials on the United Nations misinformation communications work; and plans and develops outreach activities as needed. - Works in close cooperation with the Special Assistant and OUSG team to ensure a coordinated approach with overall strategic communications direction of DGC; - Works in close cooperation with DGC senior public information officers and senior managers throughout the UN, and with senior officials of UN system entities on misinformation communications. - Establishes and maintains relations with non-governmental organizations, businesses, academia and other areas of civil society working in the field of misinformation.

Education Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in communications, journalism, international relations, public administration or related field. A first-level university degree in combination with additional two years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience, including at least three years at the international level, in communications, journalism, international relations, public administration or related area is required.

Experience working in strategic communications in the UN System, or similar international organization, is required.

Experience in researching, analyzing and monitoring media trends and reporting for at least three years is required.

Strong drafting in English is required.

Experience working in the area of misinformation and disinformation and the UN, or similar international organization, is desirable.

Languages Fluency in English is required; knowledge of another UN official language is a desirable.

Assessment Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

Special Notice - This position is temporarily available effective 1 February 2022 for an initial period of six month with the possibility of extension. If the selected candidate is a staff member from the United Nations Secretariat, the selection will be administered as a temporary assignment.
