Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located in the Multimedia Unit within the Communications and Public Information Section of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan. The Unit is responsible for devising, implementing, and managing the multimedia strategy of the Section, in line with its overall communications guidance, priorities and messaging. The incumbent will report to the Head of the Multimedia Unit.

Responsibilities Within delegated authority, the Public Information Officer may be responsible for the following duties:

  • Ensures implementation of social media activities to promote priority issues and/or major events;
  • Ensures daily monitoring, community management and engagement on UN global social platforms, monitoring and reporting on progress, and taking appropriate follow-up action;
  • Oversees daily messaging and outreach on UNMISS social platforms to increase visibility of the Mission’s work and its issues;
  • Monitors and analyzes social media impact and trends to ensure an agile approach; identifies issues and trends and advises management on appropriate action/responses;
  • Participates in development and implementation of social media strategies for campaigns on priority issues, in line with global communications guidance;
  • Produces or oversees production of social media assets through undertaking research, determining appropriate platforms and target audiences, preparing production plans, writing drafts, and obtaining clearances;
  • Acts as focal point on social media issues, including monitoring and reporting on developments, responding to inquiries and providing guidance and advice to UNMISS officials;
  • Provides training to new staff members and junior staff as needed;
  • Undertakes official travel to provide support on social media as needed;
  • Writes digital news stories, produces photography and videography content for publication on social media platforms;

    • Any other duty as required by the head of the section.

•PLANNING AND ORGANIZING: Develops clear goals that are consistent with agreed strategies; identifies priority activities and assignments; adjusts priorities as required; allocates appropriate amount of time and resources for completing work; foresees risks and allows for contingencies when planning; monitors and adjusts plans and actions as necessary; uses time efficiently.

Education Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in communication, journalism, international relations, public administration or related field. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in public information, journalism, international relations, public administration or related area is required. Experience managing professional social media presence in an international setting is required. Experience implementing social media campaigns is required. Knowledge and practical experience with Drupal, graphic design, digital asset management practices, photography and videography is desirable.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required.
