Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located in the Multimedia Unit within the Communications and Public Information Section of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan. The Unit is responsible for devising, implementing, and managing the multimedia strategy of the Section, in line with its overall communications guidance, priorities and messaging. The incumbent will report to the Head of the Multimedia Unit.

Responsibilities Within delegated authority, the Public Information Officer may be responsible for the following duties: - Producing infographics, GIFs, photography and videography and other multimedia assets for publication on the Mission’s external platforms, including website content; - Working with the Head of Multimedia to generate visually led multimedia packages for global digital campaigns.

  • Designing and producing quality visual material using relevant computer software, e.g. Adobe Creative Suite, including Photoshop, Premiere, Final Cut Pro and others, in appropriate format, including but not limited to: video and graphic design work for web, social media and print products, infographics, GIFs, logos and branding, backdrops, flyers, bulletins, newsletters, photo books, posters, banners, outreach merchandise and other promotional etc. including producing local language versions; ensuring photos and graphics are appropriate and conform to UN standards.
  • Creating and managing a searchable photo library for Communications & Public Information staff where photo products are meta-tagged and captioned appropriately.
  • Creating and managing an easily accessible archive for B-roll and video footage using Cloud storage.
  • Tracking analytics on the UNMISS website and digital platforms.
  • Undertakes official travel to provide support for digital platforms, including writing digital news stories, photographing field visits, filming and editing short videos;
  • Being the Digital Asset Management focal point with UN HQ.
  • Any other duty as required by the head of the section.

    Competencies PROFESSIONALISM: Knowledge of standard industry production and printing processes, including desktop publishing, typography, design and layout. Knowledge of internal UN printing practices and operations. Knowledge of photography, page layout and photograph sizing. Demonstrated graphic design skills and ability to independently develop creative designs and produce high-quality graphic material for varied media projects (e.g. posters, brochures, press kits, book covers, book designs, animation, video etc.). Demonstrated knowledge and ability to in Digital Asset Management and video editing and production skills. Demonstrated understanding of social media platforms. Ability to handle multiple multimedia projects simultaneously. Shows pride in work and in achievements; demonstrates professional competence and mastery of subject matter; is conscientious and efficient in meeting commitments, observing deadlines and achieving results; is motivated by professional rather than personal concerns; shows persistence when faced with difficult problems or challenges; remains calm in stressful situations. Takes responsibility for incorporating gender perspectives and ensuring the equal participation of women and men in all areas of work.

COMMUNICATION: Speaks and writes clearly and effectively; listens to others, correctly interprets messages from others and responds appropriately; asks questions to clarify and exhibits interest in having two-way communication; tailors language, tone, style and format to match audience; demonstrates openness in sharing information and keeping people informed.

Education Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in communication, visual journalism, international relations, public administration or related field. A first-level university degree or diploma in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in public information, journalism, international relations, public administration, graphic design or related area is required.

Knowledge and practical experience with Drupal, graphic design, digital asset management practices, photography, videography, and editing in Final Cut Pro is required.

Experience implementing social media campaigns is required.

Experience managing professional social media presence in an international setting is desirable.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required.
