Duties and Responsibilities

The Division for Inclusive Social Development (DISD) is part of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) of the United Nations Secretariat. The Division promotes socially inclusive development, particularly in the areas of poverty eradication, productive employment and decent work and the social inclusion of older persons, youth, family, persons with disabilities and Indigenous Peoples. DISD activities include: i) research, analysis and policy guidance on social development issues; ii) support to intergovernmental processes and mechanisms relating to social development; and iii) provision of technical cooperation and capacity development.

This internship is located in Division for Inclusive Social Development (DISD), Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA). The intern reports to the Focal Point of Public Information, DISD.

The intern will contribute to the organization of events related to inclusive social development, persons with disabilities, indigenous peoples, and older persons. The intern will assist in creating social media messages for these events and reviewing and updating DISD's websites. Additionally, the intern will contribute to research on inclusive social development and vulnerable people, and incorporate knowledge from our partners in DISD's social development network.

The intern’s tasks will include assistance with the organization of the following intergovernmental events: - The 62nd Commission for Social Development (CSocD), 5-14 February 2024 - The 14th Open-Ended Working Group on Ageing (OEWG), 1-3 April 2024 (TBC) - The 23rd UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Peoples (UNPFII), 15-26 April 2024 - Side events at the 17th Conference of State Parties to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (COSP17), 11-13 June 2024.

This internship is designed to be full-time with the opportunity for functions to be carried out in a hybrid manner.

Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's degree or equivalent). Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work. experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
