Expected duration 12 months (19 working days per month) starting, preferably, mid-November 2023. Possible extension shall be subject to performance and availability of funds.

Duties and Responsibilities Background of the assignment:

United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) is a United Nations entity established in 1968 to support countries worldwide in preventing crime and facilitating criminal justice. UNICRI is mandated to assist intergovernmental, governmental, and non-governmental organizations in formulating and implementing improved policies in the field of crime prevention and criminal justice. UNICRI's goals are:

  • to advance understanding of crime-related problems.
  • to foster just and efficient criminal justice systems.
  • to support the respect of international instruments and other standards.
  • to facilitate international law enforcement cooperation and judicial assistance.

This is a junior fellow entry-level position. The Fellow assignments are part of the public information activities of UNICRI that are aimed at raising awareness of the issues addressed by the Institute in the field of justice and crime prevention, ensuring that the strategic vision and achievements of UNICRI are clearly expressed and conveyed to a variety of different stakeholders; strengthening the brand and mission of the Institute; increasing exchange and dissemination of knowledge and information worldwide; promoting the establishment of platforms for cooperation; enhancing the Institute positioning and visibility as a result-oriented, high-quality provider of technical assistance, action-oriented research and training; and providing high-quality customer service in public information.

Specific tasks to be performed by fellow:

Under the supervision of the Public Information Officer (Communications) and in collaboration with the Unit members, the fellow will perform the following tasks:

A. Contribute to the development and implementation of communication and outreach/advocacy strategy and plans: - Support the implementation of the Institute’s communication strategy. - Monitor and analyze printed, visual, and social media and prepare reports. - Support designing and implementing communications campaigns to promote UNICRI’s priorities. - Identify relevant stakeholders to be engaged. - Support the organization of roundtable discussions and interviews.

B. Contribute to the development and dissemination of communication materials globally: - Develop and produce communication materials, including briefing materials, press releases, newsletters, and articles, and support their dissemination through effective channels. - Support the editing, proofreading, and reviewing of publications and other communication material UNICRI produces. - Translate documents into English from one or more of the other official languages of the United Nations. (In particular, Arabic and French). - Design and produce videos and photo-reportage on UNICRI’s work.

C. Contribute to UNICRI’s web/ online activities: - Assist in managing UNICRI’s websites, including developing the design and content. - Assist in managing UNICRI’s social media, including preparing posts in line with the corporate social media policy.

D. Contribute to media relations and monitoring: - Analyse, monitor and prepare reports on coverage of UNICRI priorities and activities across various media. - Conduct social media analysis and prepare reports. - Support media outreach and assist in updating the media database.

E. Facilitate knowledge-building and sharing: - Identify and synthesize best practices and lessons learned from UNICRI’s programs and ensure the exchange of information. - Support the organization of events. - Liaise with and support partners and experts involved in the events organized by UNICRI.

F. Any other job-related tasks that the supervisor may require or assign.

Qualifications/special skills An advanced University degree (Master's or equivalent) in communication, journalism, international relations, or related field is required.

Work experience is not required for applicants for junior fellow positions at UNICRI.

However, experience (preferably at the international level) in communication, journalism, international relations, or a related field is highly desirable. Such experience shall, preferably, include:

- Media relations and media monitoring. - Social media and web content management. - Production of audio-visual materials, particularly video production and editing. - Production and editing of publications.

Previous relevant experience with the United Nations or similar large international organizations is also desirable.

Languages English proficiency (i.e., oral and written fluency) is required. Good working knowledge of French and/or Arabic is an asset.

Additional Information This position is subject to local recruitment. Applicants for such positions must be authorized to work for the United Nations in the duty station where the position is located.
