Result of Service The individual contractor is expected to fulfil the following assignments in support of the ongoing promotion of the UN World Data Forum:

Coordination of public communications and digital media: - Develop a communication strategy to support the continuous promotion of Forum webinars, other events, blogs and published content on the website; - Initiate regular dialogue with partners to discuss media and advocacy related activities; - Establish a trello board or similar to share social media content with key partners.

Digital media outputs: - Draft, obtain clearance and send out media releases, self-authored blogs and advisories as well as explainers/backgrounder and FAQs (also to be posted on the website), in collaboration with the programme coordination consultant; - Manage through different social media channels the drafting of posts (1 tweet per day; additional tweets when needed) and identify and coordinate with internal communication teams on images/infographics to promote Forum activities; - Assist in the process to identify and disseminate relevant information (videos, photos, statements, bios, blogs, etc.) through the appropriate platform and/or partner.

Monitoring and impact: - Establish a monthly monitoring report showing the impact of communications each month, including the effectiveness of different communication channels used; - Provide responses to media queries received through the Forum email account.

Work Location The individual contractor is expected to work from his or her own location. Communication will be by telephone and electronic means with weekly/bi-weekly meetings to be scheduled.

Expected duration The individual contractor will work during the period 1 June 2022 to 30 November 2022.

Duties and Responsibilities The aim of the UN World Data Forum is to spur data innovation, nurture partnerships, mobilize high-level political and financial support for data, and build a pathway to better data for sustainable development. Since January 2017, the audience for the Forum has grown from 2,000 people who attended the first Forum to active list of over 20,000 interested stakeholders because of the more open and accessible Forums held in 2020 and 2021 and the establishment of a regular webinar series to maintain interest and focus between Forums.

The individual contractor is expected to maintain the wide outreach and interest established and build further on this success. This outreach should continue to encourage a greater diversity of participants to take part in the Forum from but not limited to governments, civil society, the private sector, donor and philanthropic bodies, international and regional agencies, the geospatial community, the media, academia (including students), and professional bodies.

More specifically, the individual contractor is expected to develop and coordinate the digital media for the Forum. This includes:

  • continue the digital communication on the outcomes, sessions and exhibits of past and future Forum activities such as webinars, blogs and social media outreach;
  • help develop and refine the overall communications strategy to make best use of the tools, channels and materials available for promoting the Forum; including friendly branding, slogans and messaging
  • manage the digital and social media channels, Twitter, Yammer and YouTube, preparing and organising messages and responding to interactions;
  • other web-based promotion, including on the UNSD and other websites.

    Qualifications/special skills Academic Qualifications: Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in communication, journalism, international relations, public administration or related field. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. Experience:- A minimum of two (2) years of progressively responsible experience with public communications in a high-profile international setting or related is required. - Excellent communication strategy skills and familiarity with the new development agenda (2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its goals and targets) is required. - Demonstrated experience in the development and implementation of communication strategies for high-profile international meetings, and experience working with communication and media partners from international organizations, governmental officials, academia / professional bodies, the private sector, donor / philanthropic bodies, the geospatial community, data advocates and civil society in the organization is required. - Experience in the management and implementation of social media campaigns is also required. - Experience within the United Nations Systems is desirable. Language: English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in English is required for this assignment.
