Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located in the United Nations Regional Information Centre (UNRIC) in Brussels, within the Information Centres Service (ICS), Strategic Communications Division (SCD), Department of Global communications (DGC). The UNRIC Brussels is part of the global network of United Nations Information Centres (UNICs), which are the principal source of information about the United Nations system in the countries where they are located. Overall, UNICs are responsible for promoting public understanding and support for the aims and activities of the United Nations by disseminating UN information materials to a local audience in local language; engaging local and regional partners; and, overall, bringing the United Nations closer to the people it serves. The UNRIC provides information services to Andorra, Belgium, Cyprus, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, the Holy See, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, San Marino, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom. The incumbent is under the general supervision of the Deputy Director of the UNRIC Brussels and reports directly to the Public Information Officer for the Nordic Countries at UNRIC Brussels.

Responsibilities Within delegated authority and depending on location, the Public Information Assistant may be responsible for the following duties: •Provides specialized assistance in the production and delivery of information communications products and services to include support to the Public Information Officer in charge of the 5 Nordic countries at UNRIC and/or visiting UN officials, translations of materials, media monitoring, media support, etc... •Researches a broad scope of information sources, printed and electronic; compile and present information for use in the preparation and production of communications products/services for external audiences. - Assists the information focal point on UN activities, UNRIC media engagement activities and coordinates media coverage of important events; compiles, produces and distributes to journalists basic information (on the wide spectrum of UN activities open to the press; briefs relevant parties on policies and procedures governing media coverage of the UN, clearance/accreditation requirements, etc.; liaises with news and publications agencies, public relations firms, UN photographers, etc. to provide advance notice of, and information on, upcoming meetings, briefings and special events and to ascertain coverage requirements; coordinates logistic and technical arrangements/requests and organizes and allocates space for visiting news, photo, TV and film personnel; researches, evaluates and processes applications for UN security clearances/accreditations and control media access to press briefings, etc.; serves as Accreditation and Liaison Officer for UN conferences held away from Headquarters. •Organizes and executes special events, coordinating with diverse partners and the media to highlight and publicize key events in liaison with the Nordic Desk Officer. •Oversees the distribution of audio and video materials; Serves as the online promotion coordinator by overseeing the day-to-day marketing activities and working closely with the audio/visual webmaster •Produces and edits short UNRIC video projects, radio programmes, and short website projects related to UN priorities with a particular focus on content and stories relevant for the audiences in the Nordic countries. Assists in the electronic dissemination of programmes; prepares, maintains and updates web page, to include drafting and editing content; uploads/downs load audio files and maintains file structure. •Identifies and prepares new material in Nordic languages for inclusion in appropriate web pages by: researching various information sources for relevant material and cross-checking information with author offices as required;; editing documents to conform to UN format, structure and style and preparing new pages, incorporating graphics as needed, using appropriate authoring tools and necessary programming languages;; posting documents on the UN web and/or development servers and ensuring the appropriate directory location; Provides guidance and training to junior staff. •Performs other duties as assigned.

Education High school diploma or equivalent is required.

Work Experience A minimum of seven years of experience in public communication, journalism, international broadcasting or related area is required. Experience working with social media tools, video and photo editing tools and/or mobile applications is required. Experience writing for the web and/or other communication platforms is required. Experience working with government, media, and civil society partners from the Nordic countries is desirable. Experience providing communications support to an office of the United Nations common system or a comparable international organization is desirable.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English is required and fluency in one of the Nordic languages (Danish, Icelandic, Finnish, Swedish, or Norwegian) is desirable. Knowledge of another official United Nations language or a second Nordic language are desirable.

Assessment Passing the Global General Service Test (GGST) is a prerequisite for recruitment consideration in the General Services and related categories in the United Nations Secretariat. Applicants who have not passed the GGST at the time of application may be invited for the test after submitting an application. Having passed the Administrative Support Assessment Test [in English] at the United Nations headquarters, Economic Commission for Africa, Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia, United Nations Office at Geneva, United Nations Office at Vienna, International criminal tribunal for Rwanda or International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia may be accepted in lieu of the GGST.

Evaluation of qualified candidates will include an assessment exercise which will be followed by competency-based interview.

Special Notice Staff members are subject to the authority of the Secretary-General and to assignment by him or her. In this context, all staff are expected to move periodically to new functions in their careers in accordance with established rules and procedures.
