Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located in the Digital Support Unit of the Digital and Promotion Branch, in the News and Media Division of the Department of Global Communications (DGC). The Unit is responsible for designing, implementing and managing web and digital properties of the Department, in line with its overall communications guidance, priorities and messaging and as guided by administrative policies on the institutional use of web and social media. The selected candidate will be reporting to the Digital Support Unit Chief in New York.

This position is available starting as soon as possible for an initial period of six (6) months with a possibility of extension.

Responsibilities Within delegated authority, and under supervision of the Digital Support Unit in New York, the incumbent will be responsible for the following duties:

- Provides specialized assistance in the production and delivery of information communications products and services, such as moderately complex multilingual websites and micro-sites in support of the Organizations communications priorities and strategy.

- Provide front-line support to content contributors in New York and New Delhi on UN News digital platform and other assigned DGC web properties, on staggered work hours as necessary.

- Design, prototype, and develop custom newsletter templates for the promotion of UN communications initiatives and content, such UN News articles, interviews, features, events, and campaigns. Includes development of custom code for DGC web content management publishing systems that are integrated with third party newsletter service providers.

- Serves as team member in the planning, specification, design, development, implementation, and support of computer application systems; independently liaises with users to define and specify requirements.

- Assists in the production and editing of website projects: research diverse print and digital information sources for topics and materials for projects; suggests ideas on content, narration texts, audio excerpts, design elements, etc.; selects and catalogues sound/visual materials and evaluates quality for inclusion in productions and obtains requisite clearances and copyrights.

- Handles administrative coordination in support of special training and other programmes.

- Provide orientation and training to other staff and users in client offices on the use of established digital platforms and tools.

- Manages updates and further develops internal databases; generates a variety of standard and non-standard statistical and other reports from various databases.

- Generate web analytics reports and analyze traffic to evaluate effectiveness of content and features.

- Prepares technical and user documentation for deployed computer application systems, as well as training materials and conducts technical presentations.

- Provides support for deployed computer application systems including version management, data recovery; performs ongoing reviews with users and developers and responds to users’ requests.

- Drafts correspondence and communications, including work plan revisions and other related issues, as well as prepares unit contributions for a variety of periodic reports.

- Serves as focal point for coordination, monitoring, and expedition of computer application systems development projects, involving extensive liaison with diverse organizational units to initiate requests; prepares standard terms of reference; processes and follows-up on administrative actions and resolves issues related to project implementation, e.g., organization of and participation in training, procurement of equipment and services, etc.

- Keeps abreast of developments in the field; performs benchmarking and proposes new acquisitions.

- Provides guidance to new/junior staff.

- Perform other duties as assigned.

Competencies - Professionalism: Experience providing technical support and training to remote teams, using remote desktop and presentation technologies. Knowledge of various types and levels of software testing. Knowledge of software development life-cycle and quality assurance activities. Knowledge of system development workflow and document flow processes, ability to conduct research and gather information from a wide variety of standard and non-standard sources.     Education High school diploma or equivalent is required.

    Work Experience A minimum of 7 years experience in public communication, international broadcasting or related area is required.

    Experience in information systems analysis and programming, systems administration and maintenance, software development, technical writing or related area is required.

    Experience maintaining, configuring and/or site building with Drupal is required.

    Experience providing technical assistance and support for at least one year is desirable.

    Experience with digital multimedia editing tools is desirable.

    Knowledge of fundamental web technologies and standards including HTML and CSS is desirable.

    Experience working in a multilingual international news environment is desirable

    Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of Hindi or another UN official language is an advantage.

    Assessment Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

    Special Notice - This position is temporarily available starting as soon as possible for an initial period of six (6) months with a possibility of extension. If the selected candidate is a staff member from the United Nations Secretariat, the selection will be administered as a temporary assignment.

  • While this temporary assignment may provide the successful applicant with an opportunity to gain new work experience, the selection for this position is for a limited period and has no bearing on the future incumbency of the post.
