Org. Setting and Reporting This position will be temporarily vacant for a period of three months. This position is located in the Deputy Executive Secretary Office (ECLAC, Santiago). The Public Information Assistant Assistant reports to Deputy Executive Secretary.

Responsibilities Under the overall supervision of Deputy Executive Secretary, the Public Information Assistant will be responsible for the following duties:

•Contributes to the development and production of communications products/services with minimal supervision. •Collaborates substantively on publication activities designed to promote knowledge and understanding of and to build support for UN system and activities, to include delivery of discrete components of the unit’s work programme in mass media (e.g. newspapers, TV, radio, internet, etc.). •Develops and maintains relationships with media and other official (e.g. NGOs, local community and government leaders, educational institutions, other UN agencies, etc.). •Serves as a first-line focal point and/or media liaison to facilitate the flow of information and messages on all aspects of UN activities, policies and operations institution-wide in assigned area(s) and on matters relating to the Secretary-General to key internal and external audiences. •Maintains constant contact with key offices (e.g. Secretary-General, Under-Secretaries-General, Security Council, Permanent Missions, etc.); reviews relevant documents, reports, press releases, etc. to gather information and keeps abreast of the timing and substance of key meetings, events, speeches, activities, etc.; maintains files on key subjects before the UN and on the activities of the Secretary-General. •Prepares briefs on assigned topics for senior officers; responds, both orally and in writing, to a broad range of routine questions and information requests on UN activities from the press, constituents and other parties; as appropriate forwards questions/requests to relevant parties for reply; drafts letters and official memoranda on a range of subjects. •Researches, compiles and presents information from a variety of sources; including reviewing current events worldwide and identifying items of interest to the Secretary-General or senior UN officials. •Serves as Secretary of the Exhibits Committee; organizes and coordinates all aspects of events relating to exhibits. •Informs the international news media and other key constituents of significant developments, events, press conferences, etc.; ensures the availability of copies of press releases and other key documents and information products; assists key officials, delegates and other UN offices in arranging press conferences, briefings, etc.; handles logistics with essential services. •Coordinates and oversees the entire audio/visual marketing campaign under the supervision of the Promotion and Marketing Manager. •Serves as photo lab supervisor by establishing and maintaining an efficient production of photographic images in both digital and print formats. •Coordinates TV programming for UNTV channel; assesses suitability of material to be transmitted; prepares quarterly programming plans; coordinates playlist, reruns, etc. in conjunction UN calendar of events/observances and current issues before the UN; oversees associated administrative and production activities (e.g. electronic new gathering operation; radio and satellite bookings, management operations, analysis of statistical reports, billing and account reconciliation, etc.). •Coordinates the use of the UNTV facilities; assign facilities for various events/operations and prepare production schedules; recommends set-ups for news coverage and other production events; organizes requisite services and equipment based on technical requirements; liaises with essential services to resolve issues/problems; serves as back-up UNTV camera director. •Provides substantive support to the production of film/video or radio programmes by conducting original research for feature items and other material; making recommendations on programme content, structure/style, interviews, narration texts and elements to be edited, etc.; assisting in the writing of narrations, short articles, summary excerpts, etc., conducting interviews, acting as location producer, participating in post production editing, overseeing the production of language translations/adaptations and ensuring cost effectiveness, etc. •Participates in the development, design, programming, testing and implementation of institutional websites developed in Drupal; including modules and functionalities, content types, layouts and basic visual design, workflows, data migration, and custom functionalities. •Guides and/or supervises less experienced staff. •Performs other duties as assigned.

•Planning& Organizing: Develops clear goals that are consistent with agreed strategies; identifies priority activities and assignments; adjusts priorities as required; allocates appropriate amount of time and resources for completing work; foresees risks and allows for contingencies when planning; monitors and adjusts plans and actions as necessary; uses time efficiently.

Education High school diploma or equivalent is required.

NOTE: For positions in the General Service category, candidates are required to clearly indicate in their PHPs relevant information confirming completion of High School.

Work Experience Several years of experience in public communication, international broadcasting or related area is required. . Experience in web development and design is required.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, advanced knowledge of Spanish and knowledge of English is desirable.

NOTE: ‘’Advanced knowledge’’ equals a rating of ‘’fluent’’ in all four areas (speak, read, write, and understand) and ‘’intermediate knowledge’’ equals a rating of ‘’confident’’ in two of the four areas.

Special Notice- This position will be temporarily vacant for a period of three months. - While this temporary assignment may provide the successful applicant with an opportunity to gain new work experience, the selection for this position is for a limited period and has no bearing on the future incumbency of the post. - Appointment for positions in the General Service category is done on a local basis.
