Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located in the United Nations Regional Information Centre (UNRIC) in Brussels, within the Information Centres Service (ICS), Campaigns and Country Offices Division (CCOD), Department of Global Communications (DGC).

The UNRIC Brussels is part of the global network of United Nations Information Centres (UNICs), which are the principal source of information about the United Nations system in the countries where they are located. Overall, UNICs are responsible for promoting public understanding and support for the aims and activities of the United Nations by disseminating UN information materials to a local audience in local language; engaging local and regional partners; and, overall, bringing the United Nations closer to the people it serves. The UNRIC provides information services to Andorra, Belgium, Cyprus, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, the Holy See, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, San Marino, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom. The incumbent is under the general supervision of the Director of the UNRIC Brussels and reports directly to a Senior Website Assistant.

Responsibilities Within delegated authority the Public Information Assistant is responsible for the following duties:

  • Provides specialized assistance to officers in the production and delivery of communications products and services.

  • Contributes to the development and delivery of digital media strategies in line with the United Nations mandate and related communications strategies and policies. Monitors and analyzes current events, public opinion and press, identifies issues and trends, and advises management on appropriate digital media responses. Keeps abreast of emerging trends and innovations in the digital media field and compiles relevant assets and information.

  • Generates, edits, publishes and shares daily content (text, images, video or HTML) that supports and engages audiences in a meaningful way on UNRIC digital platforms. Responsible for updating UNRIC digital/social media platforms including uploading audio and video.

  • Manages, updates and further develops internal databases; updates website, including drafting and editing content; assists in design, development and maintenance of web applications; generates a variety of standard and non-standard statistical and other reports from various databases and using online monitoring tools.

  • Serves as photographic assistant by producing digital imaging, producing photo prints, and serving as back-up photographer; writes captions for UN photos.

  • Coordinates media coverage of important events; liaises with news and publications agencies, public relations firms.

  • Participates in the planning and coordination of major exhibits; liaises with relevant departments/agencies; drafts and edits reports, production schedules, press releases and related texts, and correspondence related to the planning and production of exhibits.

  • Using relevant computer software, creates designs in appropriate format for promotional and other material, e.g. brochures, presentation materials, announcements, video and audio files etc.; ensures that photos, graphics, etc. are appropriate and conform to UN standards for digital and print materials.

  • Ensures availability and appropriate packaging of products for distribution at special events, exhibits, conferences, media functions, etc.

  • Assists in the production and editing of video/film projects, radio programmes or website projects; tracks all production material; produces scripts, cue cards, etc., selects and catalogues sound and visual materials for inclusion in productions, and obtains requisite clearances and copyrights; coordinates scheduling of commercial and internal production facilities; directs studio recordings and/or evaluates audio quality of recordings for inclusion in programmes.

  • Monitors the performance of computer-based editing and other systems of communications tools with respect to proper digital file management; reviews entries, file storage, retention and deletion practices to ensure consistent application of basic guidelines; identifies problems/issues and liaises with appropriate personnel for their resolution.

  • Identifies and prepares new material for inclusion in appropriate web pages by: researching various information sources for relevant material and cross-checking information with sources as required; retrieving and downloading pertinent documentation and other information in requisite programming languages for Web format or inserting into database after determining appropriate categorization; preparing new pages, incorporating graphics as needed, using appropriate authoring tools and necessary programming languages; preparing and updating index of documents; posting documents on the UN web and/or development servers and ensuring the appropriate directory location; checking and testing for multiple browser support, etc.

  • Provides guidance/training to junior staff.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

    Education A high school diploma or equivalent is required.

    Work Experience A minimum of five years of experience in public information, journalism, international broadcasting, or related area is required.

    Experience in implementing social media strategies and campaigns is required.

    Experience creating content for digital publishing formats and/or platforms, including adapting briefing notes, press releases, and speeches for social media and/or websites, is required.

    Experience monitoring social media and analyzing activities is required.

    Experience in digital photo and video production is desirable.

    Experience working within the United Nations Common System or a comparable international organization is desirable.

    Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English and French is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is desirable.

    Assessment Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which will be followed by competency-based interview.
