Public Information Assistant

Contract

This is a UNV National Specialist contract. This kind of contract is known as National UN Volunteer. It is normally only for nationals. More about UNV National Specialist contracts.

Eligibility criteria

Minimum age: 22 years old. Applicants must be nationals of or legal residents in the country of assignment.

Description of task

Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of the External Relations Officer or his/her designated mandated representative(s), the UN Volunteer Associate Public will:

General

• Under the supervision of the Associate External Relations Officer, develop a public information and communication strategy to promote a better understanding of UNHCR’s aims and activities in the host country;
• Assist in conceptualizing, format and prepare content for outreach material (in Arabic, French and English) targeting national and local government officials, ministries and leaders, international and regional organizations, donors, private sector, civil society, NGOs and research. Assist in their publication and dissemination;
• Arrange timely distribution of outputs and regularly update the list of relevant stakeholders;
• Represent UNHCR at Inter-Agency meetings to ensure that refugee issues are appropriately covered;
• Participate in the activities of the UN Communication Group in Mauritania (meetings, events, UN Day, etc.).

Media / Press

• Establish and maintain close working relations with individual journalists and media organizations to keep them regularly informed on UNHCR’s activities in the host country.
• Keep abreast of developments on UNHCR activities in the country and respond to press and public queries for information on all aspects of the organisation’s work;
• Organize and coordinate international and national media mission in the field, ensuring the visibility of the visits on social media platform and other media outlet.
• Scan various sources of information, such as newspapers, journals, bulletins for political and other developments likely to affect UNHCR’s activities in the host country and keep the Representative and other Staff briefed accordingly;

Social Media

• Support to maintain a strong UNHCR Mauritania presence in the country and region through various social media networks such as Facebook and Twitter
• Participate in meetings and events (if needed) and compile brief reports/updates
• Develop content used for the website, social media, and other media (in Arabic, French and English)

Communication, visibility, events

• Assist in planning and organizing advertisements, exhibitions, training seminars, conferences, meetings, social events and other activities to promote a better understanding of UNHCR’s activities and accomplishments by the general public and/or organized groups;
• Ensure availability of adequate UNHCR collateral and visibility material as well as communication with communities’ tools;
• Perform tasks as photographer and videographer, editing and retouching of photos and videos.

Internal communication

• Establish and strengthen internal communication through the introduction of staff e-news bulletins, quarterly e-newsletters, conducting staff information sessions on communication and outreach;

• Assist in enhancing internal communication by assessing the needs and developing relevant tools and by liaising with other units and disseminating relevant information across the operation.

• Any other related tasks as may be required or assigned by the supervisor.

Qualifications/Requirements

Required degree level:

Bachelor degree or equivalent

Education - Additional Comments:

Type of Degree: Journalism, Communication, Marketing or Advertising.

Required experience:

2 Months

Experience remark:

A minimum of 2 years of experience in the production of public information materials and working with the media. Experience working with Arabic media desirable.

• English(Optional), Level - Working Knowledge

Area of expertise details:

Computer skills: Proficiency in image and video production; good knowledge of multimedia software (Photoshop, Publisher, MS Office Suite, Adobe Creative Cloud, etc.); good knowledge of social media management platforms/tools (Hootsuite, Tweetdeck,etc).

• Ability to present verbal and written information to different audience
• Demonstrated high-level writing skills (e.g. press releases, briefing notes, press briefings and articles).
