Org. Setting and Reporting The United Nations Global Service Centre (UNGSC) provides critical Supply Chain, Geospatial, Information and Telecommunications Technology services and training to all Peacekeeping and Special Political Missions around the world.

The position is responsible for supporting the implementation of UNGSC communications strategy, in line with United Nations Department of Global Communication/Department of Operational Support (UNDGC/DOS) guidelines and in coordination with key internal stakeholders, especially contributing to the vision and voice of UNGSC’s social medial platforms and digital channels.

The incumbent will report to the Administrative Officer, Office of the Director, UNGSC in Brindisi, Italy.

Responsibilities Within delegated authority, the Public Information Assistant may be responsible for the following duties:

  • Provides general office support; prepares responses to information requests and inquiries; processes correspondence and other communications; maintains files/records, organizes meetings, monitors deadlines, etc.

  • Assists in planning, designing, reviewing, monitoring and implementation of UNGSC social media platforms and digital channels.

  • Provides assistance in the production and delivery of information communications products and services for all UNGSC social media platforms and digital channels.

•Updates internal databases; assists in updating, under close supervision of the Communication Team, website and social media platforms, including drafting and editing content; assists in design and maintenance of social media applications.

•Under guidance of the Communications Team, assists in the development and implementation of UNGSC's communication's strategy.

•Keeps abreast of a range of relevant social media platforms that contribute to the mission's online presence.

  • Serves as photographic assistant by producing digital imaging and serving as back-up photographer; writes captions for UN photos in close coordination with the Communications Team.

  • Assists in the coordination of media coverage of important events; liaises with news and publications agencies, public relations firms, UN photographers, etc. to provide advance notice of, and information on, upcoming meetings, briefings and special events and to ascertain coverage requirements; coordinates technical arrangements and assists in organizing and allocates space for visiting news, photo, TV and film personnel.

  • Assists in the planning and coordination of exhibits and special events.

  • Ensures availability and appropriate packaging of products for distribution at special events, exhibits, conferences, media functions, etc.

•Assists in the production and editing of video/film projects, digital communications products or website projects.

  • Assists in the research on UNGSC activities for communications on social media platforms and digital channels.

  • Liaises with broadcasting UNGSC stakeholders and contributes ideas to plan campaigns and promotional efforts across UNGSC social media platforms and digital channels.

  • Assists in the preparation of rundowns, scripts and archives, and technical production duties as necessary.

  • Performs other duties as required.

Education High School diploma or equivalent.

Work Experience A minimum of two (2) years in national and international broadcasting, communications or public relations is required.

Experience working in an international environment is desirable.

Experience in planning and organizing content for digital platforms is desirable.

Experience in drafting creation for social media is desirable.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in English (both oral and written) is required. Fluency in French (both oral and written), is desirable.

Assessment Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.

Special Notice - This position is temporarily available until 30 June 2023 with possibility of extension subject to availability of funds. If the selected candidate is a staff member from the United Nations Secretariat, the selection will be administered as a temporary assignment.

  • While this temporary assignment may provide the successful applicant with an opportunity to gain new work experience, the selection for this position is for a limited period and has no bearing on the future incumbency of the post.

  • Subject to the funding source of the position, the eligibility for this temporary job opening may be limited to candidates based at the duty station.

  • This temporary job opening may be limited to “internal candidates,” who have been recruited through a competitive examination administered according to staff rule 4.16 or staff selection process including the review of a central review body established according to staff rule 4.15.

  • Staff members of the United Nations common system organizations who will reach the mandatory age of separation or retirement within the duration of the current temporary need period are not eligible to apply.   • Passing the Global General Service Test (GGST) is a prerequisite for recruitment consideration in the General Services and related categories in the United Nations Secretariat. Having passed the Administrative Support Assessment Test [in English] at the United Nations headquarters, Economic Commission for Africa, Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia, United Nations Office at Geneva, United Nations Office at Vienna, International criminal tribunal for Rwanda or International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia may be accepted in lieu of the GGST.
