Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located in the United Nations Information Centre in Mexico City (UNIC Mexico City), within the Information Centres Service (ICS), Strategic Communications Division, Department of Global Communications.

The UNIC Mexico is the principal source of information about the United Nations system in Mexico, Cuba and the Dominican Republic. The information centre is responsible for promoting public understanding and support for the aims and activities of the United Nations by disseminating UN information materials to a local audience in Spanish and English; engaging local and regional partners; and, overall, bringing the United Nations closer to the people it serves.

The incumbent is under the overall supervision of the Director in UNIC Mexico and the direct supervision of a National Information Officer in UNIC Mexico City, ICS/SCD.

Responsibilities Within delegated authority, the incumbent is responsible for the following duties:

  • Provides specialized assistance to UNIC Mexico City in the production and delivery of information communications products and services, including for digital communications; establishes public relation strategies and publicity campaigns.
  • Provides general office support; responds to complex information requests and inquiries of UNIC Mexico City; processes, drafts and finalizes media and other communications documents; sets up and maintains files/records, organizes meetings, monitors deadlines, etc.
  • Drafts and edits reports, press releases, human-interest multimedia stories, news articles, blogs, concept notes and correspondence related to the activities of the UNIC Mexico. Researches, compiles and presents information for use in the preparation and production of communications products/services.
  • Identifies and prepares new material for UNIC Mexico City website by: researching various information sources for relevant material and cross-checking information with author offices as required; retrieving and downloading pertinent documentation and other information in requisite programming languages for Web or social media formats; drafts new content incorporating graphics as needed, using appropriate authoring tools and necessary programming languages; maintains website up to date.
  • Assist in the updates and further develops internal media databases (including contact of Mexico, Cuba and the Dominican Republic); updates UNIC Mexico City's web site, drafting and editing content; assists in design, development and maintenance of Internet applications; generates a variety of standard and non-standard statistical and other reports from various databases.
  • Supports the coordination of media coverage of UNIC Mexico City's content, activities and important events; liaises with news and publications agencies, public relations firms, UN System Communications Officers and relevant stakeholders. to provide advance notice of, and information on, upcoming meetings, briefings and special events and to ascertain coverage requirements; coordinates technical arrangements and organizes and allocates space for visiting news, photo, TV and film personnel; evaluates and processes applications for UN security clearances/accreditations.
  • Serves as UNIC Mexico City's photographic assistant by producing digital imaging, producing photo prints and serving as back-up photographer; write captions for UN photos.
  • Using relevant computer software, creates designs in appropriate format for promotional and other print and digital material, e.g. brochures, , presentations, cards, audio and video products; ensures that photos, graphics and overall products are appropriate and conform to UN standards and guides for print and multimedia materials.
  • Ensures availability and appropriate packaging of products for distribution at special events, exhibits, conferences and media functions..
  • Assists in the production and editing of UNIC Mexico City's video/film projects, radio programmes or website projects; tracks all production material; produces scripts, selects and catalogues sound and visual materials for inclusion in productions, and obtains requisite clearances and copyrights; coordinates scheduling of commercial and internal production facilities; directs studio recordings and/or evaluates audio quality of recordings for inclusion in programmes.
  • Provides guidance/training to UNIC Mexico City interns and junior staff.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education A high school diploma or equivalent is required.

Work Experience A minimum of five years of experience in public information, journalism, communications, public relations, international broadcasting or related area is required.

Experience working with traditional and digital communication outlets in a variety of communications tasks, including generating multimedia content for campaigns, web sites, traditional or social media platforms is required

Experience in managing communications projects including planning, mobilizing resources, partnerships, organizing events and coordinating activities and public information products is required.

Experience in graphic design and/or desktop publishing and production of audio and audiovisual content for a variety of formats and publics through Adobe is desirable.

Experience working within the United Nations Common System, or a comparable international organization is desirable.

Languages English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English and Spanish is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is desirable.

Assessment Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
