UNHCR Representation in Japan is seeking interns for its Protection Unit who will assist the work of the Office.

【Duration】 In principle, the internship is for 6 months (5 days per week), including paid leaves. Working hours: Weekdays 9:30-17:30; the office is closed during weekends. Japanese national holidays do not necessarily correspond to UN holidays that UNHCR observes, thus you will be requested to work on certain Japanese holidays. During the agreed period, the program in principle does not accommodate long-term temporary suspension of the internship for reasons including study abroad.

* UNHCR representation in Japan is partially working in the telework modality, however, interns are in principle expected to be prepared to be physically present in the office at any given time during the internship. Therefore, requests for telework for partial or the entire period of the internship duration will not be accommodated.

【Starting Date】 Fall 2024 (End of 2024/Early 2025)

* This recruitment is for Fall 2024, however, due to the operational requirements of the office, the candidate may be asked to consider internship period that may be in a different period such as spring 2025 session.

【Allowance】 Daily allowance is payable in accordance with UNHCR’s internship policy (If you are planning to receive financial assistance during your internship, such as a scholarship, the daily allowance provided by UNHCR will be reduced or not paid in accordance with the internal regulation).

【Qualifications & Criteria】 Eligible candidates will fulfil the following criteria: • Candidates must have completed recently (within 2 years) or are enrolled in graduate/higher degree programs (recent university graduate (within 1 year) or current undergraduate students who have completed at least 2 years of undergraduate studies may be considered depending on qualifications); • A keen interest in refugee issues (and an educational background in relevant areas an asset); • Fluency in Japanese and good English language skills, both written and spoken; • Adhere to the UNHCR code of conduct including confidentiality rules regarding all activities and tasks undertaken; • This is a local employment/internship opportunity and candidates must have the necessary legal status in the country to take up this position. As such, we are asking all candidates the status of residence in Japan (for candidates who are not Japanese nationals); and • Good knowledge of MS Office programs and Internet applications (knowledge in excel with the ability to use macro calculations or other applications a further advantage).

*Please note that selection is done on the basis of written test and online interview in both English and Japanese. * In principle, we discourage candidates from simultaneously applying to internship opportunities with other Units within UNHCR Representation in Japan

As mentioned above, candidates’ nationality will not have impact on the selection considerations. However, the internship targets interested persons of all nationalities who are based in Japan. As such, please be sure to include your Japanese address in your application in Workday. In case the applicant is outside Japan at the time of application, please indicate the intended address during the internship. During the selection process, we will ask for the following information: 1) intended starting date, 2) intended last date, 3) full-time (5 days a week) or part-time (about 4 days a week) work preference, 4) emergency contact information, such as relatives in Japan, and the phone number, 5) information on financial assistance to be received during the internship, including applied scholarships pending decision, 6) ) access to the Internet and a computer at home, 7) proof of enrolment in an insurance, as membership in national health insurance or other health insurance is required.

[Examples of the types of work interns are involved in] -Assist in researching case law and policy documents, country of origin information and State practice relating to asylum, resettlement and statelessness etc. -Assist in preparing presentation materials on refugee protection and statelessness -Assist in coordination and organization of programs and events -Creating translations and summaries of reports, meetings etc. -Assist in the publication process of protection and statelessness related materials -Carry out administrative tasks such as filing and record-keeping -Perform other duties as assigned.
