Purpose of the Job:

The purpose of the Protection Coordinator position is to implement delegated Protection initiatives as defined by Country Office’s strategic and policy frameworks. This position will focus strongly on capacity-building of NRC staff on protection-related topics and management of the protection team. The position holder will be supporting close implementation and monitoring of field activities focused on Protection of Education, Child Protection, Community Engagement on Protection of Civilians, protection integrated programming and protection mainstreaming, including negotiation, sensitization and advocacy with relevant stakeholders, development of community-based contingency plans, child-friendly spaces, referrals, protection risks and needs assessments. The position holder will be spending most of his/her weekly time in the field locations supporting the field staff who will be working under his/her direct supervision. The position holder will be directly supervising Protection Officers, and will be reporting to the Protection Project Manager.

Generic responsibilities:

  • Adherence to NRC policies, guidance and procedures
  • Contribute to Protection strategy development, project proposals and provide input on needs and gaps
  • Technically support in the implementation of delegated portfolio of Protection projects (activities, budget and project documentation) as delegated from the Protection Specialist in line with proposals, strategies and donor requirements, and ensure high technical quality
  • Provide regular progress reports to the Protection Specialist as their technical line, and the Protection Project Manager as their direct line manager.
  • Ensure that projects target beneficiaries most in need of protection, explore and asses new and better ways to assist
  • Promote and share ideas for improvement and necessary changes in the activities
  • Ensure capacity building of project staff and transfer key skills
  • Liaise and collaborate with relevant local authorities and other key stakeholders
  • Promote the rights of IDPs/returnees in line with the advocacy strategy

Specific responsibilities:

  • Help design and deliver trainings, workshops and other capacity-building activities for Protection and other CC staff, as well as relevant community members and project beneficiaries, on, Protection of Education, Child Protection, Community Engagement on Protection of Civilians, protection integrated programming, negotiation and advocacy
  • Contribute to the development and translation of training material
  • Provide close technical support, including in-field assistance, on-the-job mentoring, feedback, to field-based Protection staff (POs and PAs)
  • Support in the identification of new project areas and subsequent context and conflict specific assessments
  • Support NRC and the Protection Unit with humanitarian access negotiations, in relation to NRC protection programming activities
  • Programme Implementation, Monitoring and Reporting:
  • Produce monthly progress reports on Protection activities to help keep track of main achievements, challenges and planning priorities related to activities implemented in the field.
  • Support negotiation and advocacy with local authorities, community representatives and other relevant stakeholders based on project implementation priorities as communicated by management
  • Participate in needs assessments, field research exercises, and lead data collection in the field, interact with community representatives and local stakeholders, fill out forms and submit related reports
  • Manage the Protection Officer(s) in both Uruzgan and Kandahar
  • Representation of NRC Protection in relevant meetings at field level as delegated by management
  • Travel to project implementation areas on an equal basis, to support in programme implementation and capacity building
  • Keep accurate project-based records of activities implemented and beneficiaries reached by updating relevant databases and fact sheets on a monthly basis
  • Raise Purchase Requests (PRs), launch procurement processes related to project implementation, closely liaise with procurement, logistics, finance colleagues throughout the process in order to ensure timely completion of the process and availability of the required goods and services.
