This is a UNV National Specialist contract. This kind of contract is known as National UN Volunteer. It is normally only for nationals. More about UNV National Specialist contracts.

Description of task

Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of Senior Protection Officer or his/her designated mandated representative(s), the UNV Protection Assistant will:

  • Observe and respect RSD transition related Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Draft Resettlement referral as per required by the RSD reviewers.
  • Keep track of vulnerable cases in need of inter-unit follow for monthly dispatch to relevant units.
  • Maintain physical files to be presented to the Technical Advisory Committee in good order until the Commissioner of Refugee Affairs’ endorsement and the subsequent decision issuance.
  • Ensure accurate and regular filing of TAC profiles and of the copy of the Notification of Recognition Letters issued to persons of concern.
  • Support the registry unit in retrieving files called for RSD interview or requiring urgent RSD review.
  • Assist in mitigating fraud by reporting suspected fraud.
  • Act as a backup to prepare the RSD schedule and ascertain relevant interpreters and rooms are available to conduct scheduled RSD interviews.
  • Act as a backup to facilitate liaison with Refugee Affairs competent authorities for the joint issuance of RSD decisions personal and other relevant documents, when appropriate.
  • Act as a back up to provide counseling to persons of concern who inquire about their cases through email or telephone call. Alert and follow-up on cases with supervisor regarding any relevant protection concerns and RSD fast-tracking. Act as a backup to handle the RSD desk.
  • Any other related tasks as may be required or assigned by the supervisor.

Experience remark

  • Previous experience in human rights advocacy, refugee matters, humanitarian work.
  • Completion of UNHCR specific learning/training activities an asset
  • Computer software literacy essential. (word, excel, power point). Advanced ability to type
  • Ability to work independently while also able to work well with others
  • Ability to work under pressure and with frequent deadlines
  • Ability to handle emotionally stressful issues (e.g. issues relating to torture, rape, executions etc.)
  • Ability to effectively and compassionately work with traumatized individuals
  • Good knowledge of RSD issues and UNHCR RSD policies and operational applications an asset.

Language skills

  • English(Mandatory), Level - Fluent
