This is a UNV National Specialist contract. This kind of contract is known as National UN Volunteer. It is normally only for nationals. More about UNV National Specialist contracts.

Eligibility criteria

Minimum age: 22 years old. Applicants must be nationals of or legal residents in the country of assignment.

Description of task

Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of Protection Officer the UN Volunteer will:

  • Conduct preliminary interviews of individual cases in coordination with the Senior Protection Assistant / Protection Associate and report to the Protection Officer.
  • Inform and take action on reports received from refugees in the community or from local authorities as required.
  • Follow up on protection cases with the relevant authorities; refer to the appropriate staff and/or service, as per SoPs in place.
  • Assist in the assessment of social/medical needs and follow-up on the provision of the necessary assistance for individual cases, as applicable.
  • To serve as interpreter and translator when necessary.
  • To perform any other task entrusted to him/her apart from those mentioned above.

Qualifications/Requirements

Required degree level:

Bachelor degree or equivalent

Required experience:

24 Months

Experience remark:

  • Minimum 2 years of experience;
  • Experience with refugees and/or other people of concern in a protection capacity required;
  • Field experience;
  • Commitment to help persons of concern and willingness to cooperate with counterparts.

Language skills:

  • French(Mandatory), Level - Fluent
  • English(Optional), Level - Working Knowledge

Protection of refugees, asylum seekers and IDPs

Desirable Qualifications and Skills:

  • Knowledge of UN policies and procedures;
  • Good analytical skills;
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills in a multi-cultural setting;
  • Ability to live and work in the difficult and harsh conditions of developing countries is essential.
