Travel: UNDP will cover the cost of travel of the individual to the duty station, as well as their return to their home upon completion of their services. Office/Unit/Project Description

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The Regional Office for West Asia delivers advisory services and capacity building support to countries to achieve environment and sustainable development objectives. This consultancy is established at the West Asia Office within the framework of the Strategic Cooperation Agreement between UNEP and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The Consultant will report to the Programme Manager at UNEP West Asia Office.

Institutional Arrangement: The Programme Manager in UNEP West Asia Office.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the Programme Manager in UNEP West Asia Office and in coordination with the respective department in the Ministry of Environment in Saudi Arabia, the Consultant will carry-out, inter alia, the following duties & responsibilities:

  • Supervise the development of Protected Areas Management Plan, and the oversees processes and technology related to activities, operations, planning and management of protected areas across the Kingdom.
  • Improve performance of Protected Areas and the engagement of national and international stakeholders.
  • Coordinate with agencies in charge of protected areas outside the mandate of the NCW.
  • Assess the state of protected areas across the Kingdom.
  • Support development of improved materials for raising awareness of protected. Contribute to improved integrated management planning for protected areas.

Required Skills and Experience

Min. Academic Education

Master’s (or equivalent ) in Environmental Sciences, ecology, wildlife or forest conservation/management, or fields related or equivalent

Min. years of relevant Work experience

Minimum 7 years of experience in biodiversity conservation, protected area, wildlife or environmental management/natural ecosystems management in different contexts throughout the world

Required skills and competencies

Previous practical experience in similar tasks and familiarity with:

  • Protected Areas systems
  • information systems
  • management / management planning
  • monitoring and condition assessment

Desired additional skills and competencies

Knowledge of environment issues in Saudi Arabia is an asset

Required Language(s) (at working level)

Fluency in written and spoken English is required, proficiency in Arabic is preferred
