Contract

This is a G-6 contract. This kind of contract is known as General Service and related categories. It is normally only for nationals. It usually requires 6 years of experience, depending on education. More about G-6 contracts.

OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

Translation and Interpretation Services (TIS) is mainly responsible for translating, revising and editing health-related information and documents from English into Arabic and French. TIS occasionally provides translation from Arabic and French into English under the guidance and general direction of TIS Manager.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

1. Proofread various materials (publications, reports, papers…) and provide editorial support primarily by identifying errors in spelling, grammar, punctuation, syntax, usage, and consistency; by verifying facts, figures, dates and statistics, using standard reference sources; and by checking references and quotations.

2. Review the proofs and identify issues relating to format, font, and medical, technical and scientific terminology, etc..

3. Review and compare documents with the original language to ensure overall consistency between the documents involving the identification of missing information/translation, different translations, and different terminology.

4. Process and format a variety of documents, reports, statistical tables and official letters from a variety of rough drafts or audio files, using a variety of software.

5. Transform manner of presentation, e.g., from letter to article format.

6. Coordinate with professional, technical, editorial, and/or translation staff to obtain clarification on specific issues and/or terminology.

7. Prepare cover pages, content pages and other front matter, as well as write/edit (in Arabic) different types of letters.

8. Brief and mentor new staff to be familiar with house style and editorial practices; and to be able to complete the production of a text or publication according to WHO established procedures.

9. Align bilingual documents to be used in CAT tools.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Essential: Completion of secondary education or its equivalent. Desirable: University degree in language studies (Arabic and English). Degree in translation studies

Experience

Essential: At least 8 years of experience in language service functions (proofreading). Desirable: Working knowledge in UN agencies is an asset.

Skills

- Demonstrated ability to use relevant word processing tools, Microsoft PowerPoint and Excel as well as DTP software (InDesign or Adobe Acrobat Professional).

- Ability to use CAT tools; and to recompose figures and charts using different software.

- Excellent knowledge and skills in editing and in production aspects of technical papers and books.

- Ability to work under pressure, to be detailed oriented, quick reader and multitasker.

- Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices associated with proof-reading and quality control.

- Demonstrated ability to crosscheck and verify data, track down the appropriate resources and address questions or issues in the copy that might require additional research.

Use of Language Skills

Essential: Expert knowledge of English. Expert knowledge of Arabic. Desirable: Intermediate knowledge of French.

REMUNERATION

WHO offers staff in the General Services category an attractive remuneration package, which for the above position includes an annual net base salary starting at EGP 294,414 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, as applicable) and 30 days of annual leave.
