How can you make a difference?

Purpose of Activity/Assignment: To proofread and copy edit a qualitative research report on children and their views and experience of COVID-19 in Lesotho conducted by UNICEF.

Scope of Work:

  • Review, organize, and edit the qualitative research report (around 31,000 words) to ensure clarity of structure and core themes.
  • Proof-read the report, including checking spelling, country, and city names, as well as acronyms and other abbreviations (making sure that they follow official UNICEF terminology and conventions), style consistency, layout, references, etc.
  • Write up the Executive Summary of the qualitative research based on the report core content.
  • Ensure implementation of the UNICEF / Innocenti style guidelines (UNICEF style guide will be provided by the UNICEF Lesotho Country Office)
  • The copy editor checks that authors have provided the correct references where required
  • The editor will resolve queries directly with UNICEF concerning style and text inconsistencies
  • Be available for feedback and inputs as per the requirements of the office.

Work Assignment Overview:

The overall objective is to support in proofreading, editing, formatting, and finalizing the research report undertaken by UNICEF Lesotho. In addition, it is expected that the consultant will write the Executive Summary of the report based on the existing core content. The consultant will review and edit the document, including checks on grammar, style, spelling, formatting, and punctuation, with a view to strengthen overall clarity and quality of writing. In rare cases, the editor may need to be involved in substantial revising and reworking documents.

Tasks/Milestone:

Write the Executive Summary, and copyedit and proofread the research report to make the language reader-friendly without diluting or changing technical content.

Deliverables/Outputs:

Final research report with a well-structured and well-written content, including the Executive Summary; signed-off by UNICEF Lesotho and Innocenti

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  • Bachelors degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, English; or related field.
  • Experience and demonstrated ability to write, edit and proofread documents for various audiences, with a portfolio of documents that met high quality standards.
  • Fluency in English is required (Oral and Written).

Knowledge/Expertise/Skills required:

  • Solid editorial skills with demonstrated ability for logical and analytical writing and editing
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and produce quality work in a short time, within deadlines and under pressure
  • Ability to work independently
  • Computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office Pack
  • Tact and diplomacy for negotiating changes with authors
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated sound judgement and organizational skills
  • Experience working with the UN and/or other international organizations is an asset.
  • Familiarity with international development issues is desirable

Individuals engaged under a consultancy or individual contract will not be considered “staff members” under the Staff Regulations and Rules of the United Nations and UNICEF’s policies and procedures, and will not be entitled to benefits provided therein (such as leave entitlements and medical insurance coverage). Their conditions of service will be governed by their contract and the General Conditions of Contracts for the Services of Consultants and Individual Contractors. Consultants and individual contractors are responsible for determining their tax liabilities and for the payment of any taxes and/or duties, in accordance with local or other applicable laws.

The selected candidate is solely responsible to ensure that the visa (applicable) and health insurance required to perform the duties of the contract are valid for the entire period of the contract. Selected candidates are subject to confirmation of fully-vaccinated status against SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19) with a World Health Organization (WHO)-endorsed vaccine, which must be met prior to taking up the assignment. It does not apply to consultants who will work remotely and are not expected to work on or visit UNICEF premises, programme delivery locations or directly interact with communities UNICEF works with, nor to travel to perform functions for UNICEF for the duration of their consultancy contracts.
