OBJECTIVE OF THE OFFICE/DEPARTMENT

This requisition is for employment at the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO)/Regional Office of the World Health Organization (WHO)

The Department of Family, Health Promotion and Life Course (FPL) of the Pan American Health Organization promotes, coordinates and implements technical cooperation at the regional, subregional and country levels, emphasizing the central role of the family and community to foster a culture of health promotion and protection in which health is a social value and a human right. FPL focuses on the development and implementation of programs for women and men’s health; sexual and reproductive health; maternal and neonatal health; the integrated health and development of children and adolescents; the health of aging populations; comprehensive family immunization and leads innovative, inter-sectoral and strategic efforts to address the social determinants of health.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

Under the general supervision of the Director, Family, Health Promotion and Life Course (FPL), and the direct supervision of the Unit Chief, Comprehensive Family Immunization (FPL/IM), the incumbent is responsible for, but not necessarily limited to, the following assigned duties:

  1. Provide support and collaborate in the development of the Immunization Newsletter; review and edit the newsletter in English, Spanish, French, and Portuguese; provide support for all stages of preparation, from planning to requesting material, communicating with authors, editing, fact-checking, overseeing translation, designing, printing, overseeing multi-platform publication and distribution, including the Immunization Newsletter web version and its electronic distribution to subscribers;
  2. Participate in the preparation of a Plan of Action for the Immunization Newsletter to request resources, establish and maintain deadlines and budgets, introduce and discuss potential critical points like re-design, motivate readership, increase visibility, monitor and evaluate risks, benefits, impact and engagement among Member States and other audiences, among other aspects;
  3. Participate and support the implementation of strategies to improve communications for the regional immunization program addressing Member States’ needs;
  4. Coordinate the external editing, translation, publication, printing, and distribution of technical publications for the unit, reviewing edited and translated material to ensure consistency with the unit’s preferred terminology and Organization’s Style Manual, utilizing PAHO publication platform PubTrack and communicating with the Publications unit to publish final versions of documents in Institutional Repository for Information Sharing (IRIS) and on unit’s website;
  5. Edit technical documents and translations thereof, checking for clarity of content, consistency of terminology, and agreement with established standards in accordance with the Organization’s Style Manual; review for grammar, spelling, punctuation, formatting, accuracy, and related issues in Spanish and English;
  6. Assist in proofreading English-language translations of reports, articles, presentations, and other documents; research appropriate terminology using the Organization’s documents, as well as standard and specialized reference materials; assemble and update indexes of accepted terminology and submit to Translation Services for review and possible inclusion in the PAHO Glossary; respond to inquiries from the team;
  7. Provide instructions to graphic design and printing services; compare proofs of texts with original material and mark errors for correction following established practices and procedures;
  8. Assist in updating, editing, formatting, and organizing of information on unit’s webpage;
  9. Request, compile, edit, translate, and submit monthly contributions from Member States for WHO’s Global Immunization Newsletter;
  10. Manage the development, revision, translation, and publication of large meeting reports and other support documents;
  11. Manage translation requests from unit and serve as focal point between ETTS and unit regarding these translations;
  12. Maintain the mailing lists and organize distribution of relevant documents to partners and to contacts in Country Offices;
  13. Maintain list of journal articles published by unit and list of unit’s printed publications;
  14. Oversee distribution of technical documents to partners and Member States;
  15. Assist in collating briefing materials for visitors and background material for meetings and information sessions;
  16. Perform other related duties, as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education****:

Essential: A bachelor’s degree in literature, journalism, social communication, translation or any other field related to the functions of the post, from a recognized university.

Desirable: Training in the editing and/or publications field would be an asset.

Essential: Three years of combined national and international experience in activities related to publishing and/or editorial services.

Desirable: Experience in editing, designing, and production of immunization publications would be an asset

USD$1,736.75 - This amount is to be considered as indicative since variations may occur each month either upwards or downwards due to currency exchange rate fluctuations or inflation.
