This is a UNV National Specialist contract. This kind of contract is known as National UN Volunteer. It is normally only for nationals. More about UNV National Specialist contracts.

Eligibility criteria

Minimum age: 22 years old. Applicants must be nationals of or legal residents in the country of assignment.

Description of task

Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of the Project Officer or his/her designated mandated representative(s), the UN Volunteer Project Support Officer will:

  • Assist the GMCP regional programme coordinator in the development, implementation and evaluation of the programme activities under the Global Maritime Crime Programme
  • Support to the Prosecutors’ Network, a forum which focuses on international cooperation and mutual legal assistance; and other criminal justice support delivered in the region;
  • Assist the GMCP regional programme coordinator and other team members in identifying technical assistance needs for capacity building and develop sustainable strategies to reform and strengthen the capacity of maritime law enforcement and other criminal justice authorities in the region, including on improved detention and transfer activities;
  • Assist the supervisor and other team members in project/programme and/or budget revisions, the preparation and dissemination of costed work plans, terms of references and other related project documentation on maritime crime and detention and transfer;
  • Contribute with substantive support for policy coordination and evaluation functions, including the review and analysis of emerging issues and trends, participation in evaluations or research activities and studies;
  • Contribute to the preparation of various written outputs, e.g. draft background papers, briefing notes, analytical notes, sections of reports and studies, inputs to publications, etc, relating to maritime crime and detention issues in the region;
  • Provide administrative and substantive support to the regional programme coordinator in view of consultative and other meetings, workshops, conferences, etc., including proposing agenda topics, identifying and proposing participants, preparing background documents and presentations, handling logistics, etc;
  • Assist the GMCP regional programme coordinator in relation to administrative action related to the procurement of equipment and services including preparation of purchase orders, contracts for consultants, related payment requests, and monitoring and follow-up on such requests in line with UN financial rules and regulations;
  • Support field missions to locations the region where GMCP carries out programme activities, including provision of substantive and administrative support, data collection, etc.;
  • Undertake and pass the Basic Security in the Field (BSAFE) training;
  • Travel in Kenya and within the region where programming is implemented;
  • Perform any other duties as required/assigned.

Qualifications/Requirements

Required degree level:

Bachelor degree or equivalent

Education - Additional Comments:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in law, criminology, or political science is required;

Required experience:

24 Months

Experience remark:

  • Minimum of 2 years work experience in the field of international relations, international law or international maritime law is required;
  • Experience in the conduct of research and/or working with transnational organized crime, piracy and small island states is desirable;
  • Experience in the management and implementation of project activity is required;
  • Experience in organizing regional and international conferences is required;
  • Experience in volunteerism is an asset

Language skills:

  • English(Mandatory), Level - Fluent
  • French(Optional), Level - Working Knowledge
