The IOM Mission in Thailand operates with a team of over 271 staff members, managing more than 36 active projects in nine distinct locations across the country. With its main office centrally located in Bangkok and eight project offices in areas such as the Bangkok Metropolitan Area, Chiang Mai, Mae Hong Son, Mae Sariang, and Mae Sot, the mission is strategically positioned to support vulnerable migrants throughout the nation. This capability is further bolstered by IOM's extensive network of partners.

Presently, IOM holds the chair of the Thailand UN Migration Network. Within this framework, IOM collaborates with other UN agencies and stakeholders in the field of migration to exchange vital information and synchronize their programs. This concerted approach seeks to amplify the outcomes of their combined efforts. For 2021, a key thematic emphasis of the Network centers around ensuring the integration of migrants in the COVID‐19 Response and Recovery initiatives.

IOM's enduring relationship with the Thai government, as well as with its neighboring countries, harmonizes the organization's strategies and actions with the broader national, regional, and sub-regional blueprints. This alignment guarantees that IOM's initiatives factor in all players in the migration trajectory, inclusive of origin and destination countries. Moreover, the IOM's active involvement with private sector employers, migrant workers, and its consistent visibility in migrant communities grants the Mission a pronounced comparative advantage. Thus, the organization is optimally positioned to discern challenges tied to migration and proffer tailored advice and solutions.

Drawing on its institutional capacity and extensive expertise and presence in Thailand, IOM has developed this 2021 Strategic Response and Recovery Plan (SRRP) to respond to the ongoing threat of COVID‐19 with a continued focus on addressing the needs of vulnerable migrant populations and with a longer term view for socio‐economic recovery.

Thailand is considered to be a safe country to live in with a moderate crime rate of 47.7 percent. However, in the past three years, the country has increased its crime rate by 62.7 percent. Due to is high demand for entertainment and for being the economic, cultural, historical and commercial hub of the country, Thailand’s capital Bangkok is the most expensive city to live in and is among the world’s 100 most expensive cities. Prices are generally higher in the central business area (Sukhumvit and Sathorn Roads, Ploenchit, Rajadamri), but lower across the river to the west and in the eastern and northern suburbs, with the exception of Nichada Park which surrounds the American international school well to the north of Bangkok. Bangrak, Petchburi, Prakanong, Phya Thai, Phaholyothin, Samsen and Dusit are intermediate price areas for accommodation.

During the majority of the year, the weather is extremely hot in Thailand. April is the hottest month when the temperature can reach more than 30 degrees Celsius. From May to October, the country is in the monsoon season, presented with the particularly hot weather, but along with it with heavy rains. This can be thought for the ones not prepared for these living conditions. The traffic in Thailand is considered a bit chaotic, as the average time index is 39.38 minutes. Public transportation in Bangkok is convenient as to commute around such as sky train, metro airport rail link express boat, buses and taxi.
