This position is in the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Law Division MEAs Support and Cooperation Unit at UN Environment’s Headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya. The Law Division is the lead Division charged with carrying out the functions of UN Environment Programme in the field of environmental law, governance and related policy issues, including those related to development and implementation of Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs) and other international commitments such as the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement on Climate Change. To fulfil its mandate, Law Division work focuses on leading the international community in the progressive development of environmental law; supporting member states in the development and implementation of international and national legal, institutional and policy measures that address emerging and important environmental challenges. The MEAs Support and Cooperation Unit (MSU), under the Environmental Governance and Conventions Branch, focuses on facilitating cooperation and coordination among biodiversity conventions and related MEAs and between UNEP and those agreements; working and collaborating closely with MEAs secretariats to support Parties to the respective MEAs in the holistic/integrated implementation of their obligations in the context of the environmental dimension of the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and resolutions/decisions of their governing bodies; and facilitating policy dialogue among States on issues relating to international environmental law and governance. Under the overall guidance of the Chief of the Environmental Governance and Conventions Branch, Law Division, and direct supervision of the Project Manager of the Environmental Treaties Programme and the Data Reporting Tool (DaRT) project, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

Contribute to the DaRT Communication and Outreach Plan, preparation of various written communications materials, outputs, including drafting background papers and analytical notes, sections of reports and studies, and providing inputs to publications, websites and social media networks.
Establish cooperation for the DaRT Group of Friends with representatives of the countries that support DaRT operationalization and champion the use of DaRT which facilitates national implementation and monitoring of the new ambitious goals of the post-2020 global biodiversity framework.
Assist in the analysis of specific aspects of programme/project implementation; review relevant documents and reports; identify problems and issues to be addressed and recommends corrective actions and propose opportunities to liaise with relevant parties; identify and track follow-up actions.
Assist in performing capacity building programmes, planning and facilitating Workshops, webinars and other meetings. Provide administrative and substantive support to meetings of the subsidiary bodies of the conventions, including preparation of background documents and presentations, handling.
Carry out basic research on selected aspects of project operations and other activities, etc., to include collecting, analysing and presenting data and other information relating to biodiversity issues gathered from diverse sources. organizes meetings and workshops, including provision of substantive and administrative support, data collection. Participate in survey initiatives; assist with design of data collection tools; reviews, analyse and interprets responses, identifies problems/issues and prepares preliminary.

A minimum one year of practical experience at the national, regional or the international levels in sustainable development and environmental related programmes, projects and activities. Fluency in English is essential. Working knowledge of other UN languages is an asset. The incumbent must possess computer skills, good drafting skills and able to establish and maintain effective working relations within multicultural working environment.

The Republic of Kenya is an equatorial nation on the coast of East Africa, neighbouring Somalia, Ethiopia, Sudan, Uganda, Tanzania, and the Indian Ocean. Kenya has two levels of Government; National Government and 47 sub-national Governments called Counties. Counties are further divided into sub-counties. Kenya is a multi-party state with Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches. Kenya’s population of more than 40 million is growing at an annual rate of 2.2%. The country’s GNP per capita estimated at purchasing power parity (PPP) is $975, and the GNP is growing at an average rate of 0.1% annually. More than 26% of Kenya’s people live below the international poverty line of $1 per day. Kenya’s main food crops are “maize, wheat, pulses, roots and tubers.” (FAO).

Nairobi is a modern metropolitan city where most basic goods and services, health facilities, public transport, telecommunication and banking services and educational facilities are readily available. The city is widely connected through its main airport, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and the smaller Wilson Airport. Air transport is also available to many up-country destinations. The city is home to some 3,000 UN personnel mainly attributed to the fact that it serves as the headquarters for both the UN HABITAT and UNEP.

The socio-economic and cultural background of the immediate society the UNV would be living and working in is diverse and prevailing security conditions at the place of assignment is modest. The topographic and climatic features of the assignment location is highland cool and warm tropical climate.
