Vaccine Centre (****VC)

UNICEF Supply Division - Copenhagen, Denmark

UNICEF works in some of the world’s toughest places, to reach the world’s most disadvantaged children. To save their lives. To defend their rights. To help them fulfill their potential.

Across 190 countries and territories, we work for every child, everywhere, every day, to build a better world for everyone.

And we never give up.

The fundamental mission of UNICEF is to promote the rights of every child, everywhere, in everything the organization does — in programs, in advocacy and in operations. The equity strategy, emphasizing the most disadvantaged and excluded children and families, translates this commitment to children’s rights into action. For UNICEF, equity means that all children have an opportunity to survive, develop and reach their full potential, without discrimination, bias or favoritism. To the degree that any child has an unequal chance in life — in its social, political, economic, civic and cultural dimensions — her or his rights are violated. There is growing evidence that investing in the health, education and protection of a society’s most disadvantaged citizens — addressing inequity — not only will give all children the opportunity to fulfill their potential but also will lead to sustained growth and stability of countries. This is why the focus on equity is so vital. It accelerates progress towards realizing the human rights of all children, which is the universal mandate of UNICEF, as outlined by the Convention on the Rights of the Child, while also supporting the equitable development of nations.

Strategic Office Context:

For 60 years, UNICEF has been working on the ground in 190 countries and territories to promote children's survival, protection and development. The world's largest provider of vaccines for developing countries, UNICEF supports child health and nutrition, good water and sanitation, quality basic education for all boys and girls, and the protection of children from violence, exploitation, and AIDS. UNICEF is funded entirely by the voluntary contributions of individuals, businesses, foundations and governments.

Purpose of the job:

The position is under the direct supervision of the Contracts Manager leading the vaccine forecasting, procurement services and strengthening functions, in the Partnerships and Planning Unit within Supply Division’s Vaccine Centre. This post does not have a supervisory role, other than coordination of specific-project consultants. This position has a high level of interaction with the different Business Units within Vaccine Centre, other Supply Division Centers (specifically with Supply Chain Strengthening Centre and Immunization Technology Centre, given the linkages with immunization devices and cold chain, as well as supply chain strengthening overall), government partners and UNICEF Country/Regional Offices. The post is office-based and some travel may be involved. The Project Officer (Immunization Supply) will be implementing and supporting different projects to optimize vaccine procurement functions across the organization, support the development, planning and monitoring of Vaccine Centre-related capacity building activities, as well as facilitate specific major events held by the Vaccine Centre, such as the Vaccine Procurement Practitioners Exchange Forum. This includes planning, coordination, monitoring and reporting on the various activities related specifically to vaccine procurement strengthening, within the broader supply planning function overall. The post will also manage the online community of practice, the Vaccine Procurement Practitioners Network, including supporting all online activities and engagement with partners.

Summary of key functions/accountabilities:

  • Contribute to the development of capacity building activities in countries related to demand forecasting, strategic procurement, vaccine shipment and delivery and supply planning via the global and regional Vaccine Procurement Practitioners Exchange Forum and follow up activities.
  • Manage the online vaccine procurement community of practice network, the Vaccine Procurement Practitioners Network, including the development of training materials/activities (such as webinars) that allow for the exchange of knowledge and skills concerning vaccine supply and procurement amongst country government partners within the national immunization programme context.
  • Support the development of communication materials for all country government partner-related work, including missions to/from Copenhagen and related training materials, as well as other capacity strengthening activities.
  • Act as Knowledge Coordinator for the Vaccine Centre, supporting the mapping, documentation and monitoring of communication with external and internal parties.
  • Any other duties or assignments as requested by the supervisor.

Impact of Results:

  • Support the continued development of Vaccine Centre’s capacity strengthening activities, to ensure country government partners are continuously strengthening their vaccine procurement processes within a supply planning lens.
  • Contribute to establish sustainable partnerships by supporting and facilitating Vaccine Centre events, such as the Vaccine Procurement Practitioners Exchange Forum and various online activities via the VPPN.
  • Ensure Vaccine Centre and its mission are clearly articulated for country government partners, both during events (e.g. missions) and any related communication material.
  • Ensure the Centre’s knowledge management processes are fit for purpose.
