OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

The Department of Nutrition and Food Safety (NFS) is addressing the burden of disease from physical, chemical and microbial hazards in food and unhealthy diets, maternal and child malnutrition, overweight and obesity. The Department aims to ensure universal access to safe, sufficient nutritious food and effective nutrition actions, through setting science-based international food standards, promoting nutrition action in health systems, fostering sustainable food production and consumption, improving food environments and empowering consumers in all situations, monitoring nutrition status, and managing food safety events at the international level, closely working with Member States, UN partner agencies and non-State actors. The Monitoring Nutritional status and Food safety events (MNF) Unit defines indicators and nutrition and food safety surveillance systems, hosts and maintains nutrition and food safety databases, generates malnutrition and the burden of foodborne diseases estimates, monitors trends and measures the impact of country food safety and nutrition policies and programmes.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

1. Provide necessary support to implement activities with the Foodborne Diseases Burden Epidemiology Reference Group (FERG) as part of WHO secretariat, including activities carried under different task forces through the facilitation of communications, reporting and meetings organization;

2. Support efforts on country capacity building on data collection, analysis and reporting related to the global burden of foodborne diseases estimates;

3. Support the global monitoring of the Food Safety Impact Measurement Framework, liaising with data stakeholders and data governance colleagues within the unit and the organization;

4. Assist a process to plan, develop and conduct country consultations in respect with the national, regional and global estimates of the foodborne diseases and relevant indicators, including development and implementation of country portal;

5. Assist a process to develop and finalize WHO publication materials and related clearance processes;

6. Other relevant duties as required

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Essential: A first level university degree in public health, health science or other related field Desirable: An advanced university degree in public health, epidemiology or other related field.

Experience

Essential:

1. At least 2 years of relevant work experience at the national or international levels.

2. Experience in working in the area of foodborne diseases surveillance.

3. Experience in writing technical and/or advocacy materials and preparing publications.

Desirable:

1. Experience of project management at the national and international level.

2. Experience in facilitating Technical Expert Groups in the field of food safety and/or public health.

3. Experience in WHO or other UN agencies.

4. Experience in data management and analysis.

Skills

1. An excellent understanding of international food safety issues and the monitoring of foodborne diseases related indicators

2. Good data management skills

3. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills- Excellent English writing skills

REMUNERATION

WHO salaries for staff in the Professional category are calculated in US dollars. The remuneration for the above position comprises an annual base salary starting at USD 49,254 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, as applicable), a variable post adjustment, which reflects the cost of living in a particular duty station, and currently amounts to USD 3415 per month for the duty station indicated above. Other benefits include 30 days of annual leave, allowances for dependent family members, home leave, and an education grant for dependent children.
