UNDP developed the Election Project in Nigeria aiming at supporting the efforts initiated by the Nigerian democratic institutions as a whole. As part of this project, UNDP will work with key stakeholders such as the media, civil society organizations (CSOs) and the government to monitor, analyse and prevent or mitigate disinformation and hate speech.

Within the project, the 2th output “Transparency” includes an activity designed to support implementation of social and online media monitoring mechanism through the deployment of a digital platform, training of journalist and agreements with social media platforms to enable them to analyse information with regard to their level of accuracy and respond adequately to questions. At a global level, UNDP has developed an IT solution called iVerify to the promotion of information integrity. Following an assessment, the project and UNDP Country Office decided to implement the iVerify System in support of the media sector in Nigeria. The iVerify system is intended to be implemented in Nigeria in partnership with the International Press Centre (IPC) and a number of national actors.

Under the overall supervision of the Electoral Project Chief Technical Advisor, and in close collaboration with the EC-UNDP Joint Task Force (JTF), the UNV will have a dual matrix reporting line to the JTF/OGC project leads and the Chief Technical Advisor for day-to-day tasks. The UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks: • Support Election Project/JTF in the day to day in-country management and implementation of the project activities as specified in the iVerify System workplans. • Support to the iVerify System including: o Acting as focal point for the JTF and Election Project, including with relevant national and international actors, on the implementation in-country of the iVerify System. o Liaise with the International Press Centre and other national actors involved in the development of the iVerify System to ensure agreement on roles and responsibilities and support the drafting of necessary documents. o Assist and coordinate in any procurement/logistic processes as well as the development and roll-out of IT tools linked to the implementation of the iVerify plat-form. o Support the development of materials and delivery of trainings during the roll-out of the iVerify System. o Support the development of a communication strategy and assist in the production of content and its dissemination. o Render any additional tasks as may be required etc

Results/Expected Outputs The UNV will be expected to - • Successfully deliver support (in coordination with the JTF) for the strengthening of the International Press Centre fact-checking capacity, including through the establishment of partnerships and collaborations with other national actors involved in the initiative. • Successfully deliver support (in coordination with the JTF) for the design and implementation of the iVerify system (i.e., drafting of relevant documents, logistic/procurement, delivery of trainings, communication, etc.) and IT platform (i.e., design, customizations, communication, etc.). • The development of capacity through coaching, mentoring and formal on-the-job training, when working with (including supervising) national staff or (non-) governmental counterparts, including Implementing Partners (IPs); • Age, Gender and Diversity (AGD) perspective is systematically applied, integrated and documented in all activities throughout the assignment • A final statement of achievements towards volunteerism for peace and development during the assignment, such as reporting on the number of volunteers mobilized, activities participated in and capacities developed.

Nigeria is a unique country and UNDP is a unique (humanitarian) operation. It provides for an interest-ing and enriching environment, but also requires a mature level of cultural awareness, as well as more stamina and commitment than elsewhere to make life comfortable and affordable. Therefore, flexibility and the ability and willingness to live and work in harsh and potentially hazardous conditions, involving physical hardship and little comfort, are essential.

As this is a national UN Volunteer assignment, the UN Volunteer will be responsible for arranging his/her own housing and other living essentials.
