This is a UNV International Specialist contract. This kind of contract is known as International UN Volunteer. It is normally internationally recruited only. More about UNV International Specialist contracts.

Eligibility criteria

Minimum age: 25 years old. Nationals of the country of assignment are not eligible, except the assignments in Headquarters duty stations.

Description of task

Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of Head of Unit (Migrant Protection and Assistance) or his/her designated mandated representative(s), the UN Volunteer Project Officer will:

  • Support facilitation of the daily liaison and coordination on programme activities with the Government of Bahrain Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA), including monitoring daily activities and progress, providing regular feedback to the MPA head of unit in Bahrain, and the LMRA counterparts, on developments under the action.

  • Contribute to drafting and monitoring Work Plans (with strong, measurable indicators) for activities within the project.

  • Contribute to and coordinate the development of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Training of Trainers’ (ToT) curricula under the purview of the programme, including the review and finalisation of material prepared by expert consultants.

  • Organise and coordinate ToT training workshops and SOP consultations as outlined in the workplan. Contribute toward the development of the content of the SOPs and ToT curricula as necessary. Deliver training sessions and presentations in conferences, workshops and meetings related to technical expertise on MPA thematics.

  • Keep abreast of developments pertinent to strengthened trafficking response outlined through the US Department of State Trafficking in Persons report, ensuring activities are reflected in the developing curriculum.

  • In coordination with the head of unit, work closely with the government to provide comprehensive support on the identification and recruitment of key experts to support the institutionalisation of the Government of Bahrain’s counter-trafficking response.

  • Draft and submit regular project reports to head of unit for final review, on time and in line with donor reporting requirements.

  • Coordinate agendas and oversee logistics for workshops, meetings, study tours and any other activities as defined or arising as a result of the project, to be conducted within the framework of the IOM – Bahrain Counter trafficking portfolio.

  • Represent IOM with relevant governmental and non-governmental actors in Bahrain and link to work developing within the GCC to promote IOM’s work and support collaboration in the region relating to migrant assistance, and counter-trafficking in Bahrain, strengthening Bahrain’s lead and relevance in the region.

  • Support the head of unit to identify and build opportunities to further IOM’s work in Bahrain and through government liaison, drafting concept notes and project proposals, identifying potential partners and supporters.

Qualifications/Requirements

Required degree level:

Master degree or equivalent

Education - Additional Comments:

​Advanced higher degree (Master’s or equivalent) in a relevant area, e.g. social work, psychology, policy development or area related to protection; a first-level university degree or equivalent in combination with relevant training and/or professional experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree;

Required experience:

24 Months

Experience remark:

  • At least 2 years of professional work experience at the national and/or international level in protection, social work, adult learning or counter trafficking, or other relevant programmes; experience with curriculum development and training is an asset, as is experience working in the UN or other international development organization;
  • Creative expression of ideas and concepts, through proven experience, would be highly desirable;
  • Excellent oral and written skills is a must; excellent drafting, formulation, reporting skills;
  • Accuracy and professionalism in document production and editing;

  • Excellent interpersonal skills; culturally and socially sensitive; ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a range of partners, including grassroots community members, religious and youth organizations, and authorities at different levels; familiarity with tools and approaches of communications for development;

  • Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a challenging environment; ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national personnel;
  • Solid overall computer literacy, including proficiency in various MS Office applications (Excel, Word, etc.) and email/internet; familiarity with database management; and office technology equipment;
  • Self-motivated, ability to work with minimum supervision; ability to work with tight deadlines;
  • Sound security awareness;
  • Have affinity with or interest in Protection, volunteerism as a mechanism for durable development, and the UN System.
