Mandated as a central resource of the United Nations, UNOPS provides sustainable project management, procurement, and infrastructure services to a wide range of governments, donors, and United Nations organizations.

New York Portfolios Office (NYPO) supports the United Nations Secretariat, as well as other New York-based United Nations organizations, bilateral and multilateral partners in the delivery of UNOPS mandate in project management, infrastructure management, and procurement management.

Sustainable Development Cluster (SDC) supports diverse partners with their peacebuilding, humanitarian, and development operations. It was formed by combining the following portfolios: Grants Management Services (GMS), UN Technology Support Services (UNTSS), Development and Special Initiatives Portfolio (DSIP) It provides Services to partners' programmes that are designed, structured, and managed with a global perspective and primarily serving partners that are headquartered in New York. The SDC has a footprint of approximately 125 countries.

The Department of Operational Support (DOS) was established to provide operational advisory services to operating entities across the Secretariat, including other departments, offices away- from headquarters, field missions, and UN regional commissions.

The Office of Supply Chain Management (OSCM) includes the Office of the Assistant Secretary- General for Supply Chain Management, Logistics Division, the Procurement Division, the Uniformed Capabilities Support Division, Global Service Centre, Aviation Safety Section and the Enabling and Outreach Service.

This internship is in the Office of Supply Chain Management (OSCM) in the Department of Operational Support (DOS).

This is a position in UNOPS for supporting projects carried out for or in the United Nations Secretariat. The incumbent of this position will be an intern of UNOPS under its full responsibility.

Functional Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the Senior Programme Manager, the intern will work with the UNOPS Project team for DOS/OSCM and will perform the following duties:

Executive and Management Support

  • Support the preparation of senior-level meetings, conferences, and engagements.
  • Prepare research, analysis, and policy options for improved operational support.Attend meetings with UN counterparts and committees, and coordinate follow-up to decisions.
  • Assist in speechwriting, messaging, preparation of reports and background documents.Develop tracking tools and/or databases for the compilation and management of records, files, official documentation, audits etc
  • In consultation with the programme manager, review, analyze and revise manuals, standard operating procedures, policies, and other relevant documents for procurement, supply chain, administration.
  • Support various working groups related to contingent Owned equipment, category management.

Strategic and Project Support - Help to analyze and monitor the performance across functional areas, including supply chain, uniformed support, planning and operational support, and administrative support. - Support work on priority projects such as specific innovation initiatives.Support design, drafting, and implementing strategic priorities such as departmental-wide performance framework, client relationship models, etc. - Assist with the preparation, coordination and monitoring of various initiatives and projects. - Conduct market research for various sourcing activities and solicitations.

Training components and learning elements The intern will be part of a team and will be learning on the job daily. Dedicated time will be allocated by the supervisor for understanding the functioning of UNOPS and the UN development agency world in general.

Participation in missions or training courses The intern will be able to participate in other different trainings offered by UNOPS, including online language and project management courses. Other opportunities will be discussed with the intern upon arrival. No travel missions are foreseen from the outset.

Education/Experience/Language requirements

1. Academic qualifications

Must be enrolled or have completed a bachelor’s degree or equivalent in International Studies, Business Administration, Information Technology, Management, Project Management or related fields or have graduated from such studies within three (3) years prior to the applications date of the internship.

2. Language Skills

Fluency in written and spoken English is required. Fluency in one or more official UN languages is desirable.

This internship is not designed to lead to a staff position with UNOPS. Therefore, there should be no expectation of employment at the end of the internship.

Interns may be eligible for a monthly stipend from UNOPS provided that they do not receive funds from other institutions. Further, UNOPS may provide a one time travel lumpsum of 500 USD. However, they must make their own arrangements for accommodation, travel and necessary visa arrangements.
