Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The post is located in the Policy and Strategy Unit within the Executive Office of the Secretariat of the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal, the Rotterdam Convention on the Prior Informed Consent Procedure for Certain Hazardous Chemicals and Pesticides in International Trade and the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants. The Executive Office also cooperates internationally to increase the visibility of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions and to place chemicals and waste issues within the context of the global development and environment agenda. The Policy and Strategy unit embedded in the Executive Office provides policy and strategic advise and lead activities that support the Executive Secretary and the Deputy Executive Secretary in their role . The successful applicant will report to the Programme Management Officer at the Policy and Strategy Unit. The successful applicant will assist the Secretariat in providing support for the preparations and running of the high-level segment of the 2025 meetings of the conferences of the Parties to the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm Conventions (28 April to 9 May 2025, Geneva); supporting the implementation of the BRS Green Event Policy during the preparations and running of the meetings; and support outreach activities such as those to support the distribution of the BRS board game. The successful applicant will, among others, undertake the following tasks, under the direct supervision of the Programme Management Officer: • Support the preparation of various documents, such as meeting documents and reports; • Assist in drafting of letters and other written outputs, such as presentations or training materials; • Assist in developing outreach materials and web content; • Assist in compiling and formatting key messages from the high-level segment; • Provide support to the organization of the roundtables and pannel discussions during the High-Level segment • Provide any further support to the for the preparations and running of the high-level segment of the 2025 meetings of the conferences of the Parties, as required; • Provide any further support to the Programme Management officer for the implementation of the BRS Green Events Policy, as required.

Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). Preferred area of study: business management, public administration, international law, including international environmental law, environmental management including chemicals and waste management. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work. experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of an additional official UN language is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
