UNOPS Nepal

The UNOPS Nepal under the Bangladesh Multi Country Office (BDMCO) implements projects on behalf of UN agencies and bilateral donors and in close coordination with the Government and national authorities. The UNOPS Nepal country office implements projects in post-earthquake reconstruction (owner-driven housing, schools), COVID-19 Response, security and justice (construction of police stations and capacity building of Nepal Police) as well as field monitoring and coordination. The functional objective of UNOPS Nepal is to deliver its projects in an efficient and effective manner and in line with the principles, rules and regulations of UNOPS, so as to achieve the outcomes sought by the clients.

The main purpose of this assignment is to assist the Project Management Office (PMO) Senior Officer in ensuring the Nepal Country Office projects compliance with UNOPS' project management standards (ISO9001, PRINCE2®, UNOPS Project Management Manual and Infrastructure Project Management Manual, UNOPS Procurement, Gender Mainstreaming, Environmental Management and Health and Safety manuals). The internship's learning opportunities are:

- PRINCE2® Foundation and Practitioner certification.

- Understanding of international organisations' project management practices.

- Knowledge of UNOPS project management systems, including online platforms and Google Suite.

- Exposure to UNOPS Nepal projects, including regular field visits.

- In-depth understanding of quality management, including gender mainstreaming and environmental management.

Functional Responsibilities

The Intern shall assist the the Project Management Office (PMO) Senior Officer in the following duties and responsibilities:

Document management

● Regular inspection of UNOPS Nepal projects' shared folders and online documentation.

● Formulation of recommendations to Project Managers for document management and follow-up.

● Assistance to the creation of standardized project management documents for all projects (work breakdown structure, work package descriptions etc.)

Project assurance

● Creation and maintenance of the quarterly assurance calendar for all projects.

● Documentation of quarterly assurance meetings (minute-taking).

● Monthly review of risk registers, issue registers and lessons logs for all projects.

● Monthly review of project plans, dashboards and logical frameworks for all projects.

● Preparation of quarterly assurance checklists for both infrastructure and non-infrastructure projects.

Communication

● Assist in developing and maintaining the Country Office Communication Plan;

● Assist in the development of communication and promotion materials to showcase country portfolio’s achievements, outputs and lessons learned;

● Assist in the finalization and packaging of project outputs such as plans, manuals, handbooks/guidebooks and similar documents;

● Assist in developing and enhancing presentation materials (PowerPoint presentation, case materials and other similar workshop/training materials);

● Assist in the development of media materials relevant to Country Office business plan;

● Support the production of project factsheets and other visibility materials, and preparation and timely distribution of press releases when required;

● Contribute to public information and communication activities at the Regional and HQ level;

Health, Safety, Social and Environmental (HSSE) Management

● Assistance to organise project-specific workshops for all Nepal projects (logistics, workshop content preparation, documentation).

● Assistance to the formalisation of HSSE action plans for all infrastructure projects.

● Monitoring of the implementation of HSSE plans and recommendations to Project Managers.

Education/Experience/Language requirements

  1. Qualifications and Experience

a) Education

● Bachelor University Degree is a minimum requirement. The incumbent should have graduated from such studies within three years prior to the application date of the internship;

● Enrollment in, or completion of Advanced university degree (Masters or equivalent) in Project Management, Business Administration, International Development, Civil Engineering or in any other relevant area is preferred.

b) Internship-related experience

● Previous experience in project implementation and/or international development;

● Advanced Google Suite experience desirable (Google Docs, Sheets, Slides and Forms);

● Knowledge of the UN system and familiarity with UNOPS an advantage;

c) Language requirement

  • Fluency in written and oral in Nepali and English is required

Contract type, level and duration

Contract type: Internship Contract level: Intern Contract duration:12 months This internship is not designed to lead to a staff position with UNOPS. Therefore, there should be no expectation of employment at the end of the internship.

Interns may be eligible for a monthly stipend from UNOPS provided that they do not receive funds from other institutions. Interns are responsible for their own arrangements for accommodation, travel, and necessary visa arrangements.
