UNDP Sri Lanka’s Flagship Portfolio on SDG16- Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions brings together inclusive governance and peacebuilding work under one umbrella. The Portfolio is implemented by UNDP as part of its Country Programme and the United Nations Sustainable Development Framework and enables the provision of cohesive and integrated support to the Government of Sri Lanka.

Pillar 1 of this Portfolio – Voice and Representation, has a special focus on supporting the Parliament of Sri Lanka with its parliamentary development initiatives. UNDP provides assistance to Parliament in the implementation of the Parliamentary Development Action Plan (2020-2022) which has identified six priority areas – 1. active committees, 2. supportive legal and policy framework for parliament, 3. well-capacitated staff, 4. citizen-focused parliament, 5. parliament-initiated research and expertise, and 6. space for cross-party dialogue.

Under the direct supervision of the Technical Specialist – Parliament, the National UN Youth Volunteer will:

• Provide support to the Technical Specialist in the coordination, and implementation of parliament-related activities; • Assist in research, reporting and communications-related work in support of UNDP’s work with the Parliament, including best practices from other countries; • Support the timely preparation and submission of work plans, budgets, progress reports, programme reviews, and any other required programme reports; • Assist in preparing resource materials, and draft meeting notes/minutes; • Assist in planning, operations, financial, procurement and logistical services; and • Perform any other relevant tasks assigned by the Technical Specialist – Parliament

Colombo is situated on the Western Province of Sri Lanka and is the commercial capital of the country. Colombo is located on the west coast of the island and adjacent to the administrative capital, Sri Jayawardenepura, Kotte. The climate is fairly temperate throughout the year but humidity is usually high. From March to April the temperature averages around 31 degrees Celsius (88 degrees Fahrenheit). The only major change in the Colombo weather occurs during the monsoon seasons from May to August and October to January when heavy rainfall occurs. Sri Lanka became a member of the United Nations on 14 December 1955
