Overview

Contribute to IPBES assessments, guidelines, and proposals for policymakers.

You have:

  • An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in environmental, natural social or interdisciplinary sciences, or related field, is required.
  • A minimum of two years of progressively responsible and relevant experience in natural, social or interdisciplinary sciences is required, including experience in planning, designing, managing, implementing and evaluating projects.
  • Experience working with teams in interdisciplinary contexts and bringing together diverse approaches in shared deliverables is required.
  • Proven organizational and management skills with ability to prioritize tasks to meet deadlines and adjust to changing circumstances are required.
  • Experience writing and editing reports and documents addressed to multiple stakeholders is required.
  • Fluency in oral and written English is required.
  • Knowledge of another UN official language is desirable.

Result of Service

The services of the consultant will make a significant contribution to the ability of the relevant IPBES bodies to submit for consideration by the Plenary at IPBES 13: • The summaries for policymakers and chapters of the monitoring assessment and spatial planning and connectivity assessment; • A proposal for the nature, topics and timing of IPBES deliverables on assessing knowledge, building capacity, strengthening the knowledge foundations and supporting policy;

Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Environment Programme is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. Established in April 2012, the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) has a membership of more than 150 Governments (see www.ipbes.net) and seeks to respond to the needs of governments and other stakeholders in strengthening the science-policy interface on biodiversity and ecosystem services. Under the direct supervision of the Programme Management Officer, and the overall supervision of the IPBES Executive Secretary. The consultant will perform in particular the following duties: • Undertake specific technical tasks related to the monitoring assessment and spatial planning and connectivity assessment, such as the review of drafts and materials, tasks related to the organization of review periods and online and in-person meetings, managing underlying data and other tasks related to the processing of the assessments for consideration by the Plenary at IPBES 13, as well as ensuring compliance with IPBES rules, procedures and delivery protocols. • Undertake specific technical tasks related to the preparation, by the Bureau and Multidisciplinary Expert Panel, of a proposal for the nature, topics and timing of IPBES deliverables on assessing knowledge, building capacity, strengthening the knowledge foundations and supporting policy, including related to the preparation of written inputs and analyses, and related to the organization and facilitation of online and in-person workshops, as needed. • Liaise with secretariat staff and relevant technical support units, as needed. • Perform other duties as required. The consultant will be engaged on a part-time basis for 5 months during a 12 months period.

Qualifications/special skills

An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in environmental, natural social or interdisciplinary sciences, or related field, is required. • A minimum of two years of progressively responsible and relevant experience in natural, social or interdisciplinary sciences is required, including experience in planning, designing, managing, implementing and evaluating projects. • Experience working with teams in interdisciplinary contexts and bringing together diverse approaches in shared deliverables is required. • Proven organizational and management skills with ability to prioritize tasks to meet deadlines and adjust to changing circumstances are required. • Experience writing and editing reports and documents addressed to multiple stakeholders is required. • Relevant work experience with intergovernmental processes at the interface of science and policy is desirable.

Languages

Fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is desirable.
