This UNV assignment is part of the long-standing civil society engagement strategy of UNEP and is the gateway for Civil Society and major groups and stakeholders’ engagement and liaison across UNEP. UNEP recognizes the importance of engaging Major Groups and other Stakeholders as partners and appreciates the perspectives they bring to the table, valuable research and advocacy functions they perform and their role in helping foster long-term, broad-based support for UNEP’s mission. The Unit provides guidance and relevant services to our civil society partners as well as the governments and UNEP colleagues on how to ensure meaningful engagement of all actors of society in UNEP: https://www.unep.org/civil-society-engagement

The assignment period will focus on engagement and preparation of inputs on the way to UNEA 6.

Under the direct supervision of the Programme Officer in the Civil Society Unit of the Governance Affairs Office, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

· Assist in all aspects of the daily work of the Civil Society unit and its related activities. · Assist with Major Groups and Stakeholder's engagement in Committee of Permanent Representatives meetings and any other preparatory meeting on the way to UNEA 6. · Follow-up activities/ briefings and conferences related to Major Groups and Stakeholders' engagement. · Support in any communication-related matters on substance: website updates/ social media outreach and email communication to stakeholders. · Support accreditation application processing on a need’s basis. · Assist in the registration process through INDICO platform and ensure timely communication with applicants. · Prepare questionnaires and surveys in content and structure, organize distribution, and ensure analysis of responses. · Support MGS engagement, registration, and communication towards internal UNEP processes such as the Regional Consultative meetings in all regions. · Assist in the organization, agenda setting, and holding of events, including through capacity building sessions, presentations, leading breakout sessions, and keeping close contact through different communication channels with civil society working groups. · Review, edit, and revise publishing material and ensure smooth production of supporting tools as well as audio and video production of interviews and other communications materials.

The Republic of Kenya is an equatorial nation on the coast of East Africa, neighboring Somalia, Ethiopia, Sudan, Uganda, Tanzania, and the Indian Ocean. Kenya has two levels of Government; National Government and 47 sub-national Governments called Counties. Counties are further divided into sub-counties. Kenya is a multi-party state with Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches. Kenya’s population of more than 40 million is growing at an annual rate of 2.2%. The country’s GNP per capita estimated at purchasing power parity (PPP) is $975, and the GNP is growing at an average rate of 0.1% annually. More than 26% of Kenya’s people live below the international poverty line of $1 per day. Kenya’s main food crops are “maize, wheat, pulses, roots and tubers.” (FAO).

Nairobi is a modern metropolitan city where most basic goods and services, health facilities, public transport, telecommunication and banking services, and educational facilities are readily available. The city is widely connected through its main airport, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, and the smaller Wilson Airport. Air transport is also available to many up-country destinations. The city is home to some 3,000 UN personnel mainly attributed to the fact that it serves as the headquarters for both the UN-HABITAT and UNEP.

The socio-economic and cultural background of the immediate society the UNV would be living and working in is diverse and prevailing security conditions at the place of assignment is modest. The topographic and climatic features of the assignment location is a highland cool and warm tropical climate.
